Nutritional evaluation of low glucosinolate mustard meals (Brassica juncea) in broiler diets

Abstract: Experiments were conducted to evaluate the nutritional value of meal derived from low glucosinolate cultivars of mustard (Brassica juncea) in comparison to samples of canola meal (Brassica napus, Brassica rapa). Samples of Brassica seed (four B. juncea, one B. napus, and one B. rapa) were processed using laboratory procedures to produce oil-extracted meals, which were examined for composition (DM basis), and nutritional value for broiler chickens as judged by nutrient retention (AMEn, ileal protein digestibili… Show more

“…A little mortality of larvae was also found at later stages of development, possibly due to the variation in nutritional value of host plants. Several studies supported the nutritional value of these crops (Newkirk et al 1997;Font et al 2005;Padilla et al 2007;Scalzo et al 2008). Among different host plants, another reason of lowest mortality on cabbage may be due to choice of food.…”

“…This GLS seems to interfere in iodine utilization in the synthesis of thyroid hormones . Furthermore, Brassica species low in GLSs have been harvested for broiler diets in order to avoid this detrimental effect . In this work, progoitrin could only be detected in trace amounts by HPLC‐DAD–ESI‐MS 2 , even when the plants were treated with elicitors.…”

On the other hand, the decline in survival and expectation of life was attributed to the continuous death of insect and a sharp decline was found at later stage of development coinciding with the death of adults (Sharma et al 1999).…”
