Ruspolia differens Serville (Orthoptera: Tettigonidae) is a highly nutritious and luxurious insect delicacy that is consumed as a food source in many African countries. However, the nutrient profile of R. differens in different geographical regions have received limited research interest. Here, we provide comprehensive evidence of geographical impact on the nutrient profile of R. differens and its potential to meet the recommended dietary intake of the population. Our results demonstrated that proximate composition, fatty acids, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and flavonoid contents of R. differens collected from five districts in Uganda varied considerably. The crude protein (28–45%), crude fat (41–54%), and energy (582–644 Kj/100 g) contents of R. differens exceed that reported from animal origins. The highest crude protein, crude fat, and carbohydrate contents of R. differens were recorded in Kabale, Masaka, and Kampala, respectively. A total of 37 fatty acids were identified with linoleic acid (omega‐6 fatty acid) being the most abundant polyunsaturated fatty acid in R. differens from Kabale, Masaka, and Mbarara. All essential amino acids were recorded in R. differens, particularly histidine with values exceeding the daily requirement for adults. Mineral and vitamin content differed significantly across the five districts. The highest quantity of flavonoids was recorded in R. differens from Hoima (484 mg/100 g). Our findings revealed that R. differens could be considered as functional food ingredients capable of supplying essential macro‐ and micronutrients that are critical in curbing the rising food insecurity and malnutrition in the regions.

Edible insects have been considering as a rich resource of high-quality protein and lipid content and at the same time a low-cost nutritious resource acquiring the least expenditure during farming, breeding, rearing and harvesting. On the other hand, organic solvent consumptions in industrial areas need to be limited; being flammable by environmental hazards. That is why seeking for alternative non-toxic solvents is highly substantial. In this study ethanol-aqueous extraction method applied at three different levels to find the optimum yield of edible oil extracted of Homoptera Cicadidae Magicicada, a seasonal insect residing underground, which is consuming locally as a whole meal. These levels set using Design of expert software to variables as pH, ethanol-concentration and solvent/sample ratio and the maximum yield extracted respectively at 6, 50 and 5, by the yield of 19.5%, that is comparable to oil extracted by conventional hexane oil extraction method at 27%. Fatty acids profile of recent method and hexane extraction method analyzed using GC-MS method and the physicochemical properties of either alternative method investigated. The results were on the standard ranges. Fatty acid profile of HCM was for the most part consisted of oleic acid, following by palmitic and linoleic acid 66.5, 19.2 and 7.8 respectively in hexane extraction method and 66.3, 17.7 and 9.5 in ethanol aqueous extraction method. The Iodine Value of HCM oil was noticeably high which introduces a medicinal applicatory besides the rich amount of MUFAs and PUFAs essential oils that are well-known for their incredible health benefits.

Insects are known for their harmful effects. However, they also benefit humans, animals, plants, and ecosystems. Its beneficial uses include entomophagy and entomotherapy. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of insect extracts against Gram-negative bacteria. Antibacterial activities of thirteen crude extracts of medicinal insects were tested against twelve Gram-negative bacteria by diffusion on agar. Imipenem was used as an antibiotic for positive control. The thirteen extracts acted differently against certain Gram-negative bacteria. The largest inhibition diameter was for extracts of Cirina butyrospermi and Mylabris variabilis against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853 and Salmonella enteritidis ATCC13076, respectively. The diameters of inhibition obtained using imipenem against these same bacterial strains were 13.0 ± 0.0 mm and 22 ± 1.0 mm, respectively. The lowest inhibition diameter (7.5 ± 0.0 mm) was obtained using Anopheles gambiae extract against Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC14028. Imipenem was active on all strains tested. The highest values of the index multi-resistance to insect’s extracts were reported for Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC9027 and Serratia odorifera 652411. Overall, the results of this study confirmed the antibacterial activities of insects used by traditional health practitioners to treat different pathologies. Entomotherapy could be an alternative treatment for certain infectious pathologies caused by gram-negative bacteria.
