Adolescence is considered to be a nutritionally vulnerable period of life. The current cross-sectional study attempts to assess gender-based differences in nutritional status and dietary intake of a sample of 240 adolescents from Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand. The data were collected across two schools (Kendriya Vidyalaya, Manera, and Alpine Public School) of Uttarkashi. The nutritional status of each subject was evaluated by using two anthropometric indices, that is, weight-for-age and height-for-age, and derived indices expressed as z-scores by using the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reference data. Dietary intake was ascertained by employing 24-h dietary intake for 3 consecutive days. The results show an increasing trend of mean height and weight of adolescent boys and girls with advancing age. Gender wise, however, boys had higher prevalence of underweight than girls, whereas girls were slightly more stunted compared to boys. The dietary intake of energy, iron, calcium and protein was significantly higher in boys than their female counterparts. Despite an advantage in terms of dietary intake, an enhanced prevalence of underweight among boys may be attributed to difference in physical activity between both sexes, owing to gendered cultural setting.

Association between type of cooking fuel and body mass index among women in Cambodia

Introduction: Solid cooking fuel is the primary source of energy for almost half of the world’s population. Studies have examined the association between solid cooking fuel and respiratory and cardiovascular disease, negative pregnancy outcomes, and shortened life expectancy. However, no study has examined the association between solid cooking fuel and Body Mass Index (BMI) among women in Cambodia. Methods: Data was taken from the 2014 Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey (N=3249), women aged 15-49 years. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between type of cooking fuel and BMI, controlling for age, education, marital status, parity, employment status, kitchen being a separate room, location of cooking food, and household wealth index. Results: Compared to younger women, older women were more likely to be overweight/obese shown by multivariable adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for women aged 25-34 years 2.64 (1.80, 3.86), and for women aged 35-49 years 4.97 (3.20, 7.72). Compared to women who reside in poor households, the odds of being overweight/obese were higher for women residing in a middle household wealth index 2.62 (1.52, 4.52), and women residing in rich household wealth index 2.78 (1.83, 4.24). When adjusting for potential confounding variables, the association between type of cooking fuel and BMI observed in the unadjusted model disappeared (p = 0.103). Conclusion: These findings indicate that type of cooking fuel is not significantly associated with BMI in a nationally representative sample of women in Cambodia.

Introduction: The Kol is an ancient tribal community, who resides in the backward Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand regions bordering UP and MP. Reports claim the high level of exploitation and marginalisation of them by feudal landed landlords. Due to the dearth of studies on Kol community their plight hasn't been addressed effectively so far. Thus, this study was undertaken to assess the dietary behaviour and anthropometric parameters across the spectrum of Maternal, Lactating, Infant, Young Children, Adolescent girls, and reproductive-age women (MIYC-AR) of Kol Community. Methodology: It was a descriptive observational cross-sectional study, conducted over a period of 6 months; in hard to reach area of Manikpur block, Mangawa, in Chitrakoot district. Pregnant, lactating mothers, infant, young children, adolescent and reproductive age females who were found eligible, were included in the study. A total of 180 participants (30 from each group) were recruited by non-probability purposive sampling. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information regarding Iron folic acid and calcium intake, frequency of major meals and snacks, feeding history of infant and young child. Weight, height, head circumference and mid upper arm circumference were noted and the participants were classified accordingly. Statistical analysis was done using STATA version 13 software. Results: Only 36% and 30% of the pregnant and lactating mother, respectively, consumed IFA and calcium. The mean diet diversity score was inadequate for all the groups. Maximum among adolescents (70%) and half of the reproductive age group female (50%) were underweight. More than half of the infants (57%) were found to be malnourished on MUAC measurement, while the similar proportion among young children were found to be normal ( p < 0.001). Half of the young children had timely initiation of complimentary feeding. But, none among young children received Vitamin A syrup. Conclusion: Significant higher prevalence of malnutrition was found among infants, adolescents, and reproductive age group females. Strengthening the public distribution system and rigorous supplementary nutrition services through ICDS are the priority intervention needed to address the poor nutritional status of tribe.
