Nutrition support in the critically ill

Abstract: Together, current findings indicate that intragastric enteral nutrition should be initiated within 24 h of admission to ICU and supplementary parenteral nutrition should be avoided. Future research should aim to clarify the optimal energy delivery for best clinical outcomes, and the role of small intestinal function and its flora in nutritional care and clinical outcomes.

“…Particularly in the case of pediatric critical care where hypercatabolism and nutrient deprivation combined with low body nutritional reserves in infancy places the infant at increased risk of malnutrition (Huynh et al 2013). Malnutrition is an independent risk factor for morbidity and mortality and is associated with muscle wasting, impaired organ function, decreased immune function, increased risk of infection and poor wound healing, prolonged mechanical ventilation, and increased length of hospital stay (Huynh et al 2013;Artinian et al 2006;Rogers et al 2003).…”

“…Benefits of enteral nutrition include prevention of gut atrophy, improved feeding tolerance and nutrient substrate utilization, maintaining favorable gut microbiota, enhanced immune function, and decreased risk of infections. It is also considered less invasive, less costly, and a safer option than parenteral nutrition (Huynh et al 2013).…”
