“…Weight and height z scores revealed severe degree of nutritional compromise (À2), and triceps skin-fold thickness showed low fat stores in patients with PHT. Similar results have been reported by Taylor et al (7) and Liberodo et al (37), suggesting that SIP probably is not a significant independent factor that contributes to nutritional compromise in children with PHT. We observed no differences in intake of calories and protein among our patients with PHT and healthy controls, demonstrating that nutritional compromise in our patients was came from an intrinsic cause.…”

“…Historically, ever since our first study on the prevalence of hospital malnutrition published in Nutrition , we have defended SGA as the gold standard method to diagnose malnutrition among different groups of patients in the hospital or outpatient setting . It is notable that our study mentioned above was rejected by 2 well‐known medical journals, with the justification that the assessment tool was “subjective” and, thus, could not support the diagnoses we presented.…”

“…At the epithelial level, specifically in the small intestine, patients with liver cirrhosis present changes in barrier function. Increased intestinal permeability has been found in cirrhotic patients compared with healthy controls (7,8) . This increased permeability appears to be a result of the loosening of tight junctions associated not only with increased resistance to portal venous flow but also as a result of systemic circulatory dysfunction (9,10) .…”
