Nutrition of Preterm Infants after Discharge

Abstract: The fundamental principle underlying nutritional support is that intake meets needs thereby ensuring the best outcome, which, in the case of the preterm infant, is optimal growth and development. Achieving this goal is problematic. Most, if not all, very-low-birth-weight infants (VLBWI) are undernourished and under-grown when they are first discharged from the hospital. This has important implications for the nutritional care of preterm, particularly the breast-fed, VLBWI after hospital discharge.

Existe sim uma relação entre o catch-up e o desenvolvimento dos RNPT, mas o momento em que a recuperação do crescimento deve ocorrer ainda não está estabelecido 40 .…”

“…Growth of a term infant is evaluated beginning from its birth percentiles. Premature infants are often undernourished at discharge from the NICU [5] and the percentiles at a gestational age of 40 weeks may not reflect the infant's birth percentiles. Since there are over 12 million babies born prematurely each year [6], growth charts to continuously track growth of prematurely born infants from birth to two years of age are needed.…”
