Nutrition Management of Infants With Surgical Short Bowel Syndrome and Intestinal Failure

Abstract: Appropriate nutrition recommendations are important for the successful management of the infant with an injured gastrointestinal tract postsurgery who is at risk for intestinal failure. Management strategies that can be used to augment successful adaptation and prevent liver disease are summarized in this review. These include appropriate postoperative fluid and electrolyte management, modification of parenteral nutrition to minimize intestinal failure-associated liver disease, early and aggressive enteral fee… Show more

“…The importance of individualized treatment cannot be overstated, and pairing teduglutide with other complementary treatments aimed at enhancing intestinal adaptation may be beneficial. Finally, given promising results in preclinical pediatric models, 60 despite the current lack of human pediatric GLP‐2 and/or teduglutide clinical trials, 61 it would also be beneficial to investigate the therapeutic effects of teduglutide in pediatric patients so the therapeutic benefits of teduglutide could be extended to this population.…”

“…Intestinal adaptation is improved with early oral and enteral feedings . Oral feedings are offered even when they do not provide much nutrition value, due to a positive effect of stimulating gut hormones, growth factors, and digestive secretions that promote intestinal growth . In addition to the physiologic benefits, families of children with SBS find oral feeding a significant factor in their quality of life .…”
