Abstract

This chapter, ‘Nutrition, feeding, and dysphagia in the older patient with stroke’, is a detailed review of the nutritional problems in the older person with stroke, the changes that occur in the ageing gastrointestinal system, epidemiology of dysphagia after stroke, its relationship with frailty, and the overall prognosis. The authors look in great detail at the management of undernutrition in stroke, the assessment methods, interventions, oral supplementation, enteral feeding, treatment strategies, special situations (e.g. diabetes), dementia, and others. Dysphagia outcome measures, instrumental assessments, and detailed discussions about interventions are reviewed. The authors describe current accepted management, emerging techniques, medicolegal aspects, and suggest a framework which clinicians will find useful.
