Effect of harmful UV-B radiation and their remedial measures have been studied in Labeo rohita (rohu) larvae. Larvae were fed with four different diets: D1 and D2 contained 0.1 and 0.5 % Achyranthes aspera seeds, respectively; D3 contained 800 mg vitamin C/kg diet, and D4 contained control diet. After 50 days, all groups were exposed to UV-B radiation (80 lW/cm 2 ). One batch of control diet-fed fish was exposed to UV-B (D4Ex), and the other group remained unexposed (D4UEx). Survival rate of rohu was significantly (P \ 0.05) higher in D2 when compared to others. Among the exposed groups, highest average weight was recorded in D2 (103 ± 4 mg). Total tissue protein concentration was higher in exposed groups compared to the unexposed one. Glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamate pyruvate transminase (GPT) levels were minimum in unexposed control diet-fed fish. Vitamin C provided protection against lipid peroxidation which was evident from the lowest level of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance in exposed fish (D3). Significantly (P \ 0.05) higher nitric oxide synthase level in fish fed with Achyranthes aspera seeds (0.5 %) supplemented diet showed the immunomodulatory property of the seeds. A combination of vitamin C and seed may be more UV-B protective for carp larvae.

A six-week growth trial was performed to estimate the dietary protein requirements for maximum growth of juvenile Brazilian sardine (Sardinella brasiliensis) based on growth performance, feed utilization, body composition and digestive enzyme activity.Six isoenergetic diets were formulated to contain protein levels that increased from 250 to 500 g/kg. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 160 fish with mean initial body weight of 0.93 ± 0.13 g, which were fed four times a day to apparent satiation. Growth tended to increase with the increase in the dietary protein level up to 400 g/kg. Total protein intake was indirectly correlated to apparent protein utilization. No significant differences in whole-body composition were found between fish fed the different protein levels. Acid protease and neutral lipase activities did not show significant differences among the different protein dietary groups. Alkaline protease activity increased in fish fed up to 350 g/kg of protein and amylase activity in fish fed up to 400 g/kg. Using polynomial regression, 367 g/kg was estimated to be the optimum dietary protein requirement for maximum weight gain of juvenile Brazilian sardines. Fish farming activities have resulted in increasing nutrient pollution and subsequent deterioration of water quality in aquatic environments worldwide. Silver carp Hypophthalm ichthys molitrix can efficiently remove excessive nutrient pollution by filtering the suspended particulate organic matter. To evaluate the feasibility and capacity of using silver carp as biofilters to remove the wastes released from the farming of grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella, 3 mesocosms comprising grass carp and silver carp were developed. Carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) budgets of silver carp were measured every month from May to October in 2011. Owing to the changes in exogenous environmental conditions and autogenous physiological status such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen level and feeding behavior, the metabolic acquisition and expenditure of silver carp exhibited obvious temporal fluctuation. For a standardized silver carp with 30 cm body length, the average scope for growth of C, N and P were 54.83, 8.73 and 0.85 mg h −1 , respectively. Total nutrient assimilation capacities throughout the experimental period for C, N and P were 236.86, 37.70 and 3.67 g, respectively. Our findings show that silver carp with the coculture of grass carp provides an eco nomic and environmental win−win resolution to enhance aquaculture production and reduce organic pollution in water.
