Nutrition during pregnancy: Influence on the gut microbiome and fetal development

Abstract: Pregnancy is a finely tuned process, with the health and well‐being of the developing fetus determined by the metabolic status and dietary intake of the mother. The maternal gut microbiome is remodeled during pregnancy, and this, coupled with the maternal nutrient intake during gestation shapes the production of metabolites that can cross the placenta and affect fetal development.
