The main purpose of the present study was to explore the role of educational channels in motivating rural women to participate in improving household food security. The statistical population was composed of all married women in the Sirvan County (Ilam Province). Using Cochran's sampling formula, 368 women were sampled. The main instrument was a questionnaire whose validity was confirmed by a panel of food security experts and members of faculty agricultural sciences and natural resources university of Khuzestan and its reliability was confirmed by Cronbach's alpha coefficient and composite reliability. The alpha values varied from 0.79 to 0.85 for the educational channels and participation sections, respectively. Data were analyzed by the SPSS 18 and Lisrel 8.54 software packages. Results showed that rural women were not in the promotion of food security are participating high and nearly 80% of the studied rural household are exposed to food insecurity. The main channels used by rural women for the improvement of food security include family, TV, and neighbors. The results of the correlation analysis revealed that educational channels (local, national, and international) were significantly ( P < .01) correlated with rural women's participation in promoting household food security. Also, based on the results of means comparison, women's participation in food security improvement is significantly related with the variables of participating in extension courses, getting nutrition information, production systems, family size, distance between residency location and the city, educational level, and job of the person who is in responsibility of food provision. In addition, the results of the structural equation modeling showed that education channels had a positive and significant effect on the participation in improving household food security (R2 = 0.49, γ = 0.70, t = 8.60). The present research provides a scientifically rational justification as to how to improve food security among rural communities. The results can essentially help policymakers alleviate food insecurity and undernourishment.

Malnutrition remains a major public health issue in developing and transitional countries and food insecurity is a major indicator of the nutritional status in these societies. This research aimed to investigate the status of household food insecurity and sociodemographic factors affecting it among 2–6 years old children in an urban area in the southeast of Iran. A community-based survey was conducted from September to January 2018 on 421 children aged 2–6 years who were selected using stratified cluster random sampling. They lived in six different areas in an urban area in the southeast of Iran. Data was collected using the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Security questionnaire and anthropometric measurements. Our study showed that the prevalence of food insecurity among children was 81.7% consisting of 2.6% with low food security, 9.2% with moderate food insecurity, and 69.9% with very low food security. The weight gain of those children who were in the low food security group, was 2.63 times lower than those children in the food security group. Moreover, the chance of weight gain in the low food security and in the moderate food insecurity groups was less as 1.91 and 1.41 times, respectively. Food insecurity in children aged 2–6 years is influenced by various sociodemographic factors including weight and height, mother’s education level, sanitation as access to water closet (WC). Policymakers should plan to improve the quality of life and health of the children through improving their food security.

Scrutinize of healthy school canteen policy in Iran’s primary schools: a mixed method study

Background Schools provide an opportunity for developing strategies to create healthy food environments for children. The present study aimed to analyze the Healthy School Canteen (HSC) policy and identify challenges of its implementation to improve the school food environment in Iran. Methods This mixed method study included two qualitative and quantitative phases. In the qualitative phase, triangulation approach was applied by using semi-structured interviews with key informants, documents review and direct observation. Data content analysis was conducted through policy analysis triangle framework. In the quantitative phase, food items available in 64 canteens of primary schools of Tehran province were gathered. The food’s nutrient data were evaluated using their nutrition facts label. The number and proportion of foods that met the criteria based on Iran’s HSC guideline and the World Health Organization nutrient profile model for the Eastern Mediterranean Region (WHO-EMR) were determined. Results The main contextual factors that affected adoption of HSC policy included health (nutritional transition, high prevalence of non-communicable diseases and unhealthy food environment in and around the schools), political (upstream supportive policies and joint memorandums about health children between the Ministry of Health and Medical Education and Ministry of Education), structural (the lack of unified stewardship, inadequate human resource capacity, poor inter-sectional cooperation), economic (school financial problems, poor fiscal supportive of food policies), and socio-cultural (mothers working outside the home, the role of children’s peer group, low nutrition knowledge of school principals) factors. Assessment of the school canteens showed that a large proportion of available foods did not comply with the national guidelines (54.7 ± 2.54%) and WHO-EMR model (85.6 ± 2.34%). The main reasons identified for incomplete implementation of the policy were inadequate physical and economic infrastructure to set up standard school canteens, lack of scientific criteria for food categorization, poor monitoring, high price of healthy foods, and conflict of interest among the actors. Conclusion The majority of foods and beverages available in the school canteens did not comply with national and regional standards. Iran HSC policy needs to be improved by using an evidence-based approach and active interaction between all key actors.
