“…Unbalanced breeder nutrition expresses as multifaceted nutrient deficiencies in ostrich embryos causing abnormal yolk sac conditions and death during incubation (Hallam 1992). When egg production is forced by continually removing eggs, hens require increased calcium intakes that should be provided as a dietary inclusion of 16 g/kg with ad libitum access to granulated calcium carbonate or oyster shell (Ullrey & Allen 1996). The ad libitum access to calcium might, however, potentiate excess calcium ingestion resulting in a reduction in the absorption and utilization of zinc and, indeed, low‐grade sources of calcium from a limestone source potentially contain contaminant minerals that may interfere with the utilization of other minerals in the ration.…”
