In recent decades, research attention is focusing on utilize animal wastes for the quality planting material production with the various growing media. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted on papaya cv. Arka Surya at the nursery unit of the Department of Horticulture, Agricultural University of Kota, Rajasthan to assessment the impact of growing media and organic liquid (cow urine) on seedling growth, leaf nutrient status and economic attributes. This experiment was laid out in a factorial complete randomized design with two factors consisting eleven growing media and two levels of cow urine (with or without). Among different treatments combination used the medium Soil + Sand + Vermiculite + Cocopeat + Perlite (1:1:1:1:1) with cow urine found significantly superior over other treatments and control with respect to maximum leaf area (51.85 cm2), vigour index-I (1550.27 cm), vigour index-II (59.55 g), fresh weight of seedling (2.86 g) and dry weight of seedling (0.42 g) at 75 days after sowing. The highest number of secondary roots (17.00) were also found in the same treatment as compared to rest of the treatments. Further, it was also found superior with relation to maximum nitrogen (1.87%), phosphorus (1.14%) and potassium (2.26%) content. The highest number of stout and healthy seedlings (9000) per 250 g seeds. Therefore, maximum total gross return (₹ 90000) obtained by selling of these seedlings with higher net income (₹ 17363) due to treatment T10-Soil + Sand + Vermiculite + Cocopeat + Perlite (1:1:1:1:1) with cow urine over control. However, it is recommended that Soil + Sand + Vermiculite + Cocopeat + Perlite (1:1:1:1:1) with cow urine should be used for healthier growth and higher nutrient quality with more net profitability.

Seed priming improves germination, but responses vary with procedure and plant used, potentially from differential responses in oxidative pathways. This study targeted oxidative pathways in seed priming, using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), antioxidant-related micronutrients (Zn, Se and Mn), or a combination, to modulate germination and plant growth characteristics of hemp and barley. Hemp tolerated higher H2O2 (1 M vs 0.125 M) and micronutrients (6-fold greater) concentrations than barley, with the combination treatment significantly increasing hemp germination but decreasing barley germination. Seed priming did not improve hemp germination under salt stress (200 mM NaCl), but the micronutrient treatment improved germination of barley under salt stress (100 mM NaCl). Histological staining showed that micronutrient-primed root tips accumulated less O2- in both non-stressed and salt-stressed conditions. We assessed seed priming benefits if grown in soil by measuring plant quality in three-week-old plants potted post-priming, but most quality factors were not significantly improved, except barley where shoot zinc content increased. In summary, seed priming with H2O2 and/or micronutrients increased germination in hemp, but only micronutrients increased barley germination. Future work will continue optimising the priming methodology and further investigate the role of oxidative stress in the observed responses.

Chemicals are extensively used in agriculture to increase crop production to meet the nutritional needs of an expanding world population. However, their injudicious application adversely affects soil's physical, chemical, and biological properties, subsequently posing a substantial threat to human health and global food security. Beneficial microorganisms improve plant health and productivity with minimal impact on the environment; however, their efficacy greatly relies on the application technique. Biopriming is an advantageous technique that involves the treatment of seeds with beneficial biological agents. It exhibits immense potential in improving the physiological functioning of seeds, thereby playing a pivotal role in their uniform germination and vigor. Biopriming mediated molecular and metabolic reprogramming imparts stress tolerance to plants, improves plant health, and enhances crop productivity. Besides, it is also associated with rehabilitating degraded land, improving soil fertility, health, and nutrient cycling. Although biopriming has vast applications in the agricultural system, its commercialization and utilization by farmers is still in their infancy. This review aims to critically analyze the recent studies based on biopriming‐mediated stress mitigation by alteration in physiological, metabolic, and molecular processes in plants. Additionally, considering the necessity of popularizing this technique, major challenges and prospects linked to the commercialization and utilization of this technique in agricultural systems have also been discussed.This article is protected by copyright.
