Nutrient Balances and Management of Soil Fertility Prior to the Arrival of Chemical Fertilizers in Andalusia, Southern Spain

Abstract: Studies on the role of nutrient balances in the socioecological transition of agriculture are scarce, particularly in the Mediterranean region where manure availability was low. The role of nutrient balance in this transition was evaluated in three representative localities of the inland Mediterranean region of southern Spain from 1750 to 1900. Changes in cropland distribution, population, manure availability and demand, and nutrient balance at cropland and aggregated scales were assessed. Data suggest that ag… Show more

“…Soil management in Brazilian states: comparative analyzes of Physical andMonetary Soil Nutrient Balance in 2005 and2015 The comparative analysis between the years reveals a 55% increase in the total NPK balance. Among the states, Rio Grande do Sul showed a greater increase, about 81%, followed by Paraná (56%) and Mato Grosso (53%).…”

“…Soil management in Brazilian states: comparative analyzes of Physical andMonetary Soil Nutrient Balance in 2005 and2015 In Brazil, 2018) found a positive surplus when counting the nutrient balance. Cunha et al, 2014, working with data from 2009 to 2012, noticed a nutritional deficit only regarding molybdenum (Mo).…”

“…More recently, N-P-K analysis became the basis of several historical nutrient balances studies embracing most input and output processes. These have been applied at spatial scales from villages or parishes 11 13 to countries 14 or even to the globe 15 . In general, the agroecosystem is analyzed as a whole, comprising all land uses in a given region, but some studies have focused on just one crop 16 or crop rotation 17 .…”

“…Tello et al [12] and Marull et al [13,14] have used SEM approaches to comprehensively study the evolution of land use changes and effects on local biodiversity. Also, flows of nutrients have been traced through agro-ecosystems to better understand issues of soil fertility [15][16][17][18]. Still, a vitally important aspect of (pre-industrial) socio-ecological systems has been widely under-researched.…”
