More than 70 % soils of Odisha are acidic with dominance of Fe and Al where Mo deficiency in soils affects the yield of rabi green gram which is much below than the national average. With this background an experiment was conducted by soil application four dose of molybdenum (0, 250, 500, 750 g/ha) and two foliar spraying of molybdenum @0.1% Mo (F1) and 0.2% Mo (F2) on the variety IPM 02-14. A light texture acidic sandy loam soil of central farm, OUAT, Bhubaneswar which is dominated by micronutrients like Fe, Mn, Al and deficient in molybdenum was selected for the experiment. It was observed that growth and yield attributing characters increased with the increase in foliar spraying (FS) of molybdenum as well as combined application of foliar and soil application up to a dose of (250 g/ha soil application with 0.2% foliar application of Mo) after which a decrease in all the attributes was observed. The highest yield of green gram was 549 kg/ha at combined application of 250 g/ha soil with 0.2% foliar spray of molybdenum. Uptake of major nutrients (N,P and K)was increased and the highest uptake was at Mo3F2. Improvement in soil fertility was observed in post-harvest soil with a positive balance in availability of nitrogen after meeting the crop requirement. Therefore, application of both soil and foliar spray (250 g/ha soil with 0.2%) was optimum dose of Mo for green gram grown in low fertile and Fe rich acidic soil. Bangladesh J. The Importance of Ion Homeostasis and Nutrient Status in Seed Development and Germination

Seed is the dissemination unit of plants initiating an important stage in the life cycle of plants. Seed development, comprising two phases: embryogenesis and seed maturation, may define the quality of sown seed, especially under abiotic stress. In this review we have focused on the recent advances in the molecular mechanisms underlying these complex processes and how they are controlled by distinct environmental factors regulating ion homeostasis into the seed tissues. The role of transporters affecting seed embryogenesis and first stages of germination as imbibition and subsequent radicle protrusion and extension were revised from a molecular point of view. Seed formation depends on the loading of nutrients from the maternal seed coat to the filial endosperm, a process of which the efflux is not clear and where different ions and transporters are involved. The clear interrelation between soil nutrients, presence of heavy metals and the ion capacity of penetration through the seed are discussed in terms of ion effect during different germination stages. Results concerning seed priming techniques used in the improvement of seed vigor and radicle emergence are shown, where the use of nutrients as a novel way of osmopriming to alleviate abiotic stress effects and improve seedlings yield is discussed. Novel approaches to know the re-translocation from source leaves to developing seeds are considered, as an essential mechanism to understand the biofortification process of certain grains in order to cope with nutrient deficiencies, especially in arid and semiarid areas. Finally, the role of new genes involved in hormone-dependent processes, oxidative response and water uptake into the seeds during their development or germination, have been described as plant mechanisms to deal with abiotic stresses.

The aim of study was to investigate the effects of boron on germination and seedling parameters of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] under drought stress conditions. The experiment was conducted in a factorial trial in a randomized plot design with four replication in a growth chamber. In this study, three different sorghum cultivars were used. Drought conditions were performed at three different levels using PEG (0.-0.4 MPa and -0.8 MPa). Four boron doses (0-5-10-15 mM B) solutions are formed as boric acid (H3BO3). Parameters measured in Gözde 80 were superior to other cultivars under drought stress conditions. The maximum mean germination time, seedling viability index, shoot and root length, shoot and root fresh weight, and total biomass, were detected as 4 days, 74%, 10 cm, 13 cm, 63 mg, 21 mg, and 80 mg, respectively. Differences were noted in the response of different sorghum cultivars to drought stress, and significant decreases were observed as the drought level increased. Low boron applications generally increased germination and seedling parameters compared to control under drought conditions. The boron effects applied to alleviate the drought stress effects have been noticeably positive. Compared to control conditions, the best results were also generally observed in the application of 5 mM B at a drought stress dose of -0.4 MPa. It was concluded that high doses of boron applications caused double stress with drought and were even lower than drought applications alone. It was recorded that due to the reasons listed above, careful attention should be paid to the boron doses to be applied.
