NUT (Nuclear Protein in Testis) Carcinoma: A Report of Two Cases With Different Histopathologic Features

Abstract: NUT (nuclear protein in testis) carcinoma (NC) is an aggressive carcinoma characterized by rearrangements of the NUT gene on chromosome 15q14. Histologically, it is a poorly differentiated carcinoma composed of monotonous, medium-sized, round cells with scant amphophilic or eosinophilic cytoplasm. Foci of abrupt keratinization are often seen. In this report, we compare the morphology of 2 cases of NC. The first case shows characteristic features of uniform, round epithelioid cells admixed with foci of abrupt k… Show more

“…The more common description is a poorly differentiated or undifferentiated carcinoma with abrupt and focal squamous differentiation, containing medium-sized round or oval cells with high nuclear-to-cytoplasm ratio, with variably prominent nucleoli and pale cytoplasm. Thin rim and foci of abrupt keratinization are often present [46, 47]. NC have also been reported to display different appearances, including high-grade spindle cell neoplasms [48], small round blue cell sarcoma [24], and high-grade neuroepithelial neoplasm with PNET [27].…”

“…Squamous differentiation is frequent and may appear as abrupt keratinization with sheets of immature cells juxtaposed to mature squamous nests. [6][7][8][9] NC may share morphological similarities with neuroendocrine tumors. The nuclei may vary from pale open chromatin to hyperchromatic neuroendocrine-type appearance.…”
