NuSTAR UNVEILS A HEAVILY OBSCURED LOW-LUMINOSITY ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEUS IN THE LUMINOUS INFRARED GALAXY NGC 6286

Abstract: We report the detection of a heavily obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 6286 identified in a 17.5 ks Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array observation. The source is in an early merging stage and was targeted as part of our ongoing NuSTAR campaign observing local luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies in different merger stages. NGC 6286 is clearly detected above 10 keV and by including the quasi-simultaneous Swift/XRT and archival XMM-Newton and Chandra dat… Show more

“…Figure 11. The hard X-ray luminosity versus the mid-infrared luminosity for the sample of hard-X-ray-selected AGNs from the 70 month Swift/BAT survey for which a detailed broadband spectral analysis enables a direct determination of the intrinsic absorption (Ricci et al 2015(Ricci et al , 2016, showing unabsorbed ( < N 10 ) AGNs. We also plot the advanced mergers from this work, and the confirmed duals listed in Table 8 for which X-ray and mid-infrared fluxes are available.…”

“…This AGN, however, has a low intrinsic luminosity, and contributes less than 1% of the bolometric luminosity of the system (Ricci et al 2016). The companion nucleus NGC 6285 was undetected by NuSTAR (Ricci et al 2016). In Figure 21, we display the diffuse X-ray spectrum for Arp 293, along with the best-fit model.…”

“…Based on infrared spectra, Dixon & Joseph (2011) conclude that less than half of the infrared luminosity of NGC 6286 is powered by an AGN. Ricci et al (2016) analyzed the archival Chandra data for Arp 293 jointly with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR data, and concluded that NGC 6286 contains a buried AGN. This AGN, however, has a low intrinsic luminosity, and contributes less than 1% of the bolometric luminosity of the system (Ricci et al 2016).…”

“…To better constrain the X-ray absorption of hot DOGs and hence their intrinsic X-ray luminosities, it is necessary to obtain reliable detections at  E 10 keV, where their emission is less affected by neutral gas absorption (e.g., Annuar et al 2015;Lansbury et al 2015;Puccetti et al 2016;Ricci et al 2016aRicci et al , 2016bTanimoto et al 2016). The simplest way to do this is to observe brighter, lower-redshift sources.…”
