Biofouling is the unwanted accumulation of deposits on surfaces, composed by organic and inorganic particles and (micro)organisms. Its occurrence in industrial equipment is responsible for several drawbacks related to operation and maintenance costs, reduction of process safety and product quality, and putative outbreaks of pathogens. The understanding on the role of operating conditions in biofouling development highlights the hydrodynamic conditions as key parameter. In general, (bio)fouling occurs in a higher extension when laminar flow conditions are used. However, the characteristics and resilience of biofouling are highly dependent on the hydrodynamic conditions under which it is developed, with turbulent conditions being associated to recalcitrant biodeposits. In industrial settings like heat exchangers, fluid distribution networks and stirred tanks, hydrodynamics plays a dual function, affecting the process effectiveness while favouring biofouling formation. This review summarizes the hydrodynamics played in conventional industrial settings and provides an overview on the relevance of hydrodynamic conditions in biofouling development as well as in the effectiveness of industrial processes.

The heating and cooling of non-Newtonian liquids in tanks with mechanical impellers are operations commonly employed as chemical reactors, heat exchangers, distillers, extractors, thinners and decanters. In particular, the design of heat exchangers (jackets, helical coils, spiral coils and vertical tubular baffles) in tanks requires the prior knowledge of the rheology of the liquid for the calculation of the convection coefficients and the Reynolds number, in order to obtain the area thermal exchange. This chapter aimed to present the basic concepts of tanks with agitation, non-Newtonian liquids, hydrodynamics, heat transfer and, finally, with a practical design example for engineers and undergraduate students.

In order to reduce the cost of small batch production of turbodrill and improve the quality of blade processing, the integrated processing of turbodrill impeller is taken as the main research content. Firstly, the WZ-115 turbodrill impeller is used to process the turbodrill impeller. Secondly, the three-dimensional model of the blade output from ANSYS/BladeGen module is drawn by UG software. After obtaining the three-dimensional model, the processing module of UG software is used to design the processing technology, determine the processing steps and routes, and compile the processing program. The tool path of rough and finish machining is observed and modified by using simulated processing, and the amount of tool eaten at each stage is improved to generate the processing program. Finally, the impeller is measured by the coordinate measuring instrument, and the errors of the data are analyzed by UG software. The results show that the turbodrill impeller meets the requirements of processing accuracy, the surface profile meets the design requirements, the surface processing quality meets the expectations, and the turbodrill impeller has the ability of actual processing, which can effectively solve the problem of high cost in small batch production such as university test and enterprise research and development. It can be seen that the integral forming technology of turbo drill impeller can effectively solve the problem of long production cycle in the process of turbo drill development and test, and control it. At the same time, the cost can efficiently and quickly complete the processing of turbo drill, and can ensure the processing quality.
