This study aimed to develop and test the instrument of the caring behavior of nursing students in the Intensive Care Unit. The caring behavior domains were formulated and prepared according to the significant findings from the review of literature on the carative factors of Jean Watson. All third and fourth year Bachelor of Science in Nursing students of the University of Hail were recruited as respondents based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Content validity was reviewed by an expert panel. Data analyses were performed using Stata SE 13. Quantitative variables were presented as means and standard deviations. The internal consistency reliability of each domain was calculated as Cronbach's alpha 1.00; very high from 0.81 to 0.99; high from 0.61 to 0.80; moderate from 0.41 to 0.60; low from 0.21 to 0.40; and very low from 0 to 0.20. Using the developed tool, sixty-nine (94.52%) Bachelor of Science in Nursing students actively participated in the study. Ages of respondents are from 21 to 44 years old (M= 26, SD ±5.67). Seven caring behavior items were rated outstanding, being sensitive to patients' rights, (4.58 ±0.85) monitoring patient's vital signs (4.55 ±0.83) provide privacy (4.58 ±0.88) awareness of patients' health problems (4.55 ±0.72), hand washing (4.59 ±0.81), performs nursing procedures (4.57 ±0.90). This study demonstrated that perceptions of caring behaviors among Saudi nursing students were congruent to the results of other related studies on the most and least important caring behaviors.

Spirituality involves a sense of connectedness, meaning making and transcendence. There is abundant published research that focuses on the importance of spirituality to patients and their families during times of illness and distress. However over the last decade there has also been a growing awareness about the importance of considering the need to address peoples' spiritual needs in the workplace. Engaging in ones own personal spirituality involves connecting with the inner self, becoming more self aware of ones humanity and limitations. Engaging with ones personal spirituality can also mean that people begin to greater find meaning and purpose in life and at work. This may be demonstrated in the workplace by collegial relationships and teamwork. Those who engage with their own spirituality also engage more easily with others through a connectedness with other staff and by aligning their values with the respective organization if they fit well with ones personal values. Workplace spirituality is oriented towards self-awareness of an inner life which gives meaning, purpose and nourishment to the employees' dynamic relationships at the workplace and is eventually also nourished by meaningful work. Exercising ones personal spirituality contributes towards generating workplace spirituality. Essentially acting from ones own personal spirituality framework by being in doing can contribute towards a person becoming a healing and therapeutic presence for others, that is nourishing in many workplaces. Personal spirituality in healthcare can be enhanced by: reflection in and on action; role-modeling; taking initiative for active presence in care; committing oneself to the spiritual dimension of care; and, integrating spirituality in health caregivers' education. As spirituality is recognized as becoming increasingly important for patients in healthcare, increasing educational opportunities are now becoming available for nurses internationally that could support personal and workplace spirituality.

Aim To understand how nursing students at the end of their nursing education view nursing care. Background Although care is understood as the essence of nursing, it is often difficult for nurses to provide care, which demonstrates a contradiction between theory and practice. Moreover, it is unknown to what extent this contradiction is transmitted to future nursing professionals or how they view nursing care and its practice. Design Qualitative ethnographic research. Methods The fieldwork was conducted between December 2010 ‐ May 2012 in a university nursing school in Barcelona and two centres where students carry out most of their practical education. The data collection techniques were participant observation and focus groups. A thematic analysis was used. Results The students demonstrated contradictory views of nursing care. On one hand, they voiced a more theoretical, official definition where care is considered the core of the profession. On the other hand, they also expressed a view where the provision of care is not nurses’ principal daily activity, a fact that did not surprise them. Students interpreted caring as an activity that has low value and that can be transferred unproblematically to other professionals. Conclusion The contradictory views of care reveal a problem in the transmission of the definition of nursing to new generations of professionals and reflect a problematic professional reality where there is dissonance between how nursing is defined and how it is carried out in practice.
