“…Nurses who have frequent contact with people diagnosed with COPD are uniquely positioned to assess breathlessness and to initiate interventions to prevent or minimize this symptom. Given the long‐standing published recommendations for nurses to follow‐up patients diagnosed with COPD (Barnett, ; Stallard, ), it was surprising to find so few published nursing intervention studies. Nevertheless, because of the multidimensional nature of breathlessness and difficulty managing the symptom, comprehensive and multiple interventions with multidisciplinary approaches may be warranted (Kuzma et al., ; Parshall et al., ).…”

“…Then, the group of antecendents related to clinical-care interventions emphasizes the prominence of the contribution of nursing in the COPD patients' QoL improvement. In fact, the nurse is the protagonist of many interventions among those analyzed: educational interventions (Efraimsson et al, 2008;Wang et al, 2012), prevention (Ingadottir & Jonsdottir, 2010;Lin et al, 2012), rehabilitation (Barnett, 2008), and monitoring of clinical conditions (Bischoff et al, 2012;Caress et al, 2009).…”

“…Hence, the postulation to use NPI for breathlessness as found in reviews and studies,9 18 19 does not automatically lead to an increased use of these interventions by nurses in the management of breathlessness.
