Nursing Duty Hours’ Length and the Perceived Outcomes of Care

Abstract: Background and objective: Working long shifts are associated with fatigue, medical errors and poor outcomes of care. However, there is a lack of guide that can provide policy-makers the optimal duty length in the Malaysian hospitals. The study aims to investigate the impact of nursing duty hours' length on the quality and safety of care delivered in the "Medical-Surgical Wards" in Malaysia.Method: Cross-sectional study was carried out on 12 private hospitals. “…6 Moreover, studies have indicated that increasing the number of nurse staff assigned to a unit provides better patient care and decreases the incidence of mortality and adverse patient outcomes. 20,[40][41][42] Lack of meaningful recognition can be a source of compassion fatigue, 9 while recognizing contributions 36 can result in compassion satisfaction. 43 A study indicated that providing personnel with opportunities to demonstrate pride in their work, to be recognized for their achievements, and to be encouraged by superiors strengthened the workforce, which eventually improved the work environment.…”

“…The proposed theoretical model was developed based on the Donabedian theory of quality improvement [ 14 ]. Researchers have used this theory to develop a model and establish a system of delivering better quality and safer care [ 15 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ]. The NCAAA instrument was validated in this study for measuring the theoretical model, which can be used by researchers in future research for identifying gaps and for optimizing and providing an enhanced learning experience…”

“…However, maintaining privacy is a challenge in any hospital settings [33]. The medical staff needs to change at every shift to ensure a safe environment by preventing tiredness and human error; thus, a mother with more than 12 h of labour experience could be attended to by three different teams of nurses [34,35]. Deficiency in effective communication and insufficient delivery suite added to the stressor [6].…”
