Nursing care left undone, practice environment and perceived quality of care in small rural hospitals

Abstract: Hospitals are an integral part of Australian rural communities. Not only are they often the largest employer in the area, but also they are usually the sole provider of health care to rural communities (Twigg, Cramer, & Pugh, 2016). Health care in rural hospitals is provided largely by nurses who need to have a broad skill set and the ability to work autonomously with limited medical and allied health support (Baernholdt & Mark, 2009). Studies have shown that rural hospitals operate with fewer resources than t… Show more

“…Through literature review, it was not difficult to find that although the relationship among the above variables had been investigated in some studies, few of them focused on psychiatric nurses, especially in China (Al Sabei et al., 2020; Lake et al., 2016; Li et al., 2019). In addition, studies about the relationship between the specific dimensions of nursing work environment and the other variables were limited and showed inconsistent results (Al Sabei et al., 2020; Lee et al, 2014; Smith et al., 2020). Moreover, existing studies only explored the correlative relationship and failed to clarify the specific impact pathways and how the different dimensions of nursing environment exerted effects on work‐related outcomes.…”

“…nursing work environment, psychiatric nurses, quality of care, turnover intention, work engagement Al Sabei et al (2020) found staffing and resource adequacy was a significant predictor of high quality of care, while Smith, Lapkin, Sim, and Halcomb (2020) revealed all the five dimensions of nursing work environment were correlated with quality of care. Thus, which dimensions of nursing work environment could effectively predict the quality of care and whether there exist mediating variables also need further exploration.…”

“…Previous studies have pointed out that work insecurity, independent of the salary, affects the satisfaction with the work (Han et al., 2009). On the other hand, work pressure is perceived when less time is available to perform all the tasks needed for the care of a patient, increasing care left undone and worsening the quality of care (Smith et al., 2020). It seems that younger and less experienced nurses require specific actions, and management innovations such as GPC implementation programmes could be an opportunity for obtaining their commitment to the institution.…”

“…The task undone approach, using task undone tools, was applied in eight studies (Brooks Carthon et al, 2015;Hessels et al, 2015;Lake et al, 2017Lake et al, , 2018Lake et al, , 2020aPark et al, 2018;Smith et al, 2020a). Six studies (Bragadóttir et al, 2017;Duffy et al, 2018;Kim et al, 2018;Pereira et al, 2020, Smith et al, 2020bZeleníková et al, 2020) used the missed care approach. This approach is represented mainly by the MISSCARE Survey (Kalisch & Williams, 2009).…”

“…On the other hand, some domains of the PES-NWI were found to be significant contributing factors to UNC. Seven studies (Campbell et al, 2020;Kim et al, 2018;Park et al, 2018;Rochefort & Clarke, 2010;Schubert et al, 2013;Smith et al, 2020b;Zeleníková et al, 2020) evaluated associations between specific domains of the PES-NWI and UNC. However, most studies calculated a composite score averaging scores of the dimensions to delineate the overall NWE, which do not provide a basis for specific interventions or supportive strategies for mitigating UNC events.…”
