Background Preoperative competence is a crucial aspect of nursing and midwifery students’ education to improve the quality of care and patient safety. It assists nursing and midwifery students in maintaining and enhancing their practice by determining strength and areas that should be developed. Purpose This study aims to assess the level of nursing and midwifery students’ knowledge regarding preoperative nursing care and determine the most influencing demographic variables. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional design using an online self-administered questionnaire was utilised among 202 nursing and midwifery students selected by simple random sampling. The Perceived Preoperative Nursing Care Competence Scale for Nursing students (PPreCC-NS) was used to assess the perceived preoperative nursing care competence of nursing and midwifery students. Descriptive statistics were obtained, and multiple regression was used for data analysis. Results The overall level of perceived preoperative nursing care competence was adequate 99.09 ( SD = 10.81). The highest mean score was recorded for ability to fulfil legal responsibilities and adherence to ethical principles ( M = 23.6, SD = 2.53). The lowest mean score was obtained for research and professional development ( M = 17.6, SD = 2.60). The regression analysis showed that place of residency explained significantly about 4.53% of the variance in the nursing and midwifery students’ knowledge regarding preoperative nursing care, and it was the strongest predictor ( B = 0.218, p = 0.002). Conclusion The perceived level of preoperative nursing care among nursing and midwifery students was found to be adequate and associated with place of residence. Future research should be conducted to explore factors affecting nursing and midwifery students’ preoperative competence in different cultures and contexts.

Objective. This work sought to establish the relationship between the degree of dependency with hospitalization time of patients intervened surgically in a regional hospital of Peru. Methods. The study was analytical, cross-sectional with retrospective data collection, studying 380 patients treated in the surgical service at Regional hospital Docente in the municipality of Cajamarca (Peru). The patients’ demographic and clinical information was obtained from the daily care records in the hospital’s surgery service. The univariate description was conducted through absolute and relative frequencies and confidence intervals for proportions at 95%; for the association between the degree of dependency and hospitalization time Log Rank (Mantel-Cox) – Chi-square was applied, as well as the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, with statistical significance of p<0.05. Results. The study had 53.4% male patients, with mean age of 35.3 years, referrals from operating room (64.7%), surgery specialty (66.6%) and the most-frequent surgical intervention was appendectomy (49.7%). Mean hospitalization time was 10 days; 88.1% of the patients had grade-II dependency. The degree of patient dependency had a significant impact on the days of post-surgery hospitalization with direct relationship between both variables (p=0.038). Conclusion. Hospitalization time is determined by the degree of dependency of patients subjected to a surgical intervention; thereby, it is fundamental to anticipate all the necessary resources for proper care management.

Introduction Surgical care has been a vital part of healthcare services worldwide. Several patient safety measures have been adopted universally in the operating room (OR) before, during, and following surgical procedures. Despite this, errors or near misses still occur. Nurses in the OR have a pivotal role in the identification of factors that may impact patient safety and quality of care. Therefore, exploring the OR nurses’ understanding of their roles and responsibilities for patient care and safety in the intraoperative practice, which could lead to optimal patient safety, is essential. Objective This study explored the understanding of OR nurses regarding their roles and responsibilities for patient care and safety measures in the intraoperative practice. Methods The study was conducted in one of the tertiary care hospitals in the United Arab Emirates. Qualitative, descriptive, exploratory research design was utilized. The data were collected using semi-structured face to face interviews. Purposive sampling included eight nurses. Data analysis was performed following Colaizzi's seven-step strategy. Results Seven emerging themes were identified. The main themes are: patient safety, preoperative preparation, standardization of practice, time management, staffing appropriateness, staff education and communication, and support to the patient in the OR. Conclusion OR nurse leaders may take into consideration the current findings as a reference for quality improvement projects in the hospital, considering the specific characteristics of each local setting. Although the participants consider that the environment is safe and the quality of care is high in the study setting, there is still room for improvement on workflows and processes. OR workflow should be improved especially by addressing the potential patient safety issues.
