The elderly are the fastest growing portion of the world population. The majority of elderly want to remain independent as long as possible, with responsibility for their care often falling to family or caregivers. Assistive robots could help maintain independence in the elderly while relieving the burden of care on families and healthcare professionals. This scoping review seeks to examine the type and scope of global policies on the use of robotic technology for care of the elderly in international jurisdictions and to assess how they align with current Canadian policies. This review also seeks to determine current perceptions on the use of robotics in care of the elderly and potential barriers to their use that policy makers could encounter. A comprehensive literature search was conducted for articles related to robotic care of the elderly, perceptions of robotic care of the elderly and related policies, using a global lens. A three-step strategy was used to review and identify articles. The search identified 10 primary and secondary studies and 13 grey literature sources. Studies reported that response to robotic care for the elderly had both positive and negative aspects, and that concerns around privacy and cost were prevalent. Japan and the EU had the most comprehensive policy strategies and proposals. Robotic policy in healthcare is relatively new but will become increasingly important in the coming years. Canada needs to strengthen and anticipate its national policy strategy to ensure it can stay aligned with the fast pace of technological change. Further robust research should continue to explore potential for, and concerns over robotic care.

Advances in technology have expanded the use of soft actuators in various fields especially in robotics, rehabilitation and medical field. Soft actuator development provides many advantages, primarily being simple structures, high power to weight ratio, good compliance, high water resistance and low production cost. However, most soft actuators suffer the problem of being oversized which could potentially hurt users as it is often made of hard materials such as steels and hard rigid plastics. Current drawbacks of soft actuator implementation in robotic arms are on its excessive weights, causing these robots to be difficult to set up by patients themselves which in turn makes it less applicable for home rehabilitation training program. Hence, there is a need to design a soft actuator which is safe and more flexible, especially for applications in areas of patients in rehabilitation area or in-house rehabilitation program. In this paper, we propose the design of robot arm using master device pneumatic actuator and analyse the implementation for the above purpose. The system comprises primarily of the master and slave arms, two accelerometers and two potentiometers providing references for attitude control, six quasi-servo valves, and SH-7125 microcontroller. Our proposed design exhibits functions of the actuator that has been generated from elastic deformation of extension and contraction of the cylinder structure when high pneumatic pressure is supplied to the chamber. The control performance of the device is investigated using simulation method, whereby the rational model of the robot arm and the quasi servo valve with the embedded controller is implemented and analysed. It is found that the analysed results of the model approved well with the desired values.

Background Future nursing shortages and advanced technological developments mean that robots and automated devices could play a valuable role in nursing, but little has been published on their use, and outcomes, to date. Aim This integrative review identified how robots are currently used in nursing and the outcomes of those initiatives. Design This study used integrative review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses. Data sources We searched the CINAHL, PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases for peer‐reviewed papers published in English from January 2010 to August 2018. Review methods The five‐stage review process by Whittemore and Knafl was used. Results The 25 included papers showed that robots and automated devices were mainly used in nursing to deliver medication, monitor patients, and provide nursing treatments. The outcomes were evaluated in relation to patient safety, working time and workload, usability, and the end users' satisfaction. In addition, the costs, care outcomes, nurses' behaviour, and changes in working procedures were considered. Conclusions Robots and automated devices have the potential to develop nurses' work, but more research and critical evaluations are needed to find the most suitable devices and focus on the functions that will provide the best outcomes for nurses' work.
