This study evaluated the relationship between dietary energy, and protein (animal and plant based) intakes and anthropometric measurements in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Individuals between the ages of 19 to 65 who received MHD treatment for more than 3 months from October 2021 to February 2022 in the state hospitals were included in the study. Body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2) was calculated for each patient, and anthropometric measurements including upper middle arm circumference, triceps skinfold thickness (TST) and hand grip strength (HGS) were carried out. 3-day food records and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) were used to assess nutritional status of the patients. Of the 51 MHD patients included in the study, 33 (64.7%) were male and 18 (35.3%) were female. The mean age of the patients was 50.37 ± 11.55 years, and length of time on MHD was 39.49 ± 51.68 months. The mean energy intake of female and male MHD patients was 20.01 ± 6.94 and 17.26 ± 6.24 kcal/kg/d, respectively. The mean dietary protein intake of female and male MHD patients were 0.84 ± 0.35 and 0.78 ± 0.30 g/kg/d, respectively. Dry weight (P = .048), BMI (P = .020), TST (P = .013), and HGS (P = .026) of well-nourished and moderately malnourished female MHD patients according to SGA results were found to be lower than in male patients. While the majority of the patients receiving MHD treatment appeared to be well-nourished according to the SGA results, energy and protein intakes obtained from the food records were below the recommended daily dietary intake. These evaluations affected the anthropometric measurements including HGS, BMI, and TST. Therefore, there is a need for more comprehensive clinical studies in which anthropometric measurements, food consumption, biochemical findings and nutritional screening tools are used all together to evaluate nutritional status in MHD patients.

Introduction:The epidemiology and presence of pediatric medical emergencies and injury prevention practices in Kenya and resource-limited settings are not well understood. This is a barrier to planning and providing quality emergency care within the local health systems. We performed a prospective, cross-sectional study to describe the epidemiology of case encounters to the pediatric emergency unit (PEU) at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya; and to explore injury prevention measures used in the population.Methods: Patients were enrolled prospectively using systematic sampling over four weeks in the Kenyatta National Hospital PEU. Demographic data, PEU visit data and lifestyle practices associated with pediatric injury prevention were collected directly from patients or guardians and through chart review. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics with stratification based on pediatric age groups.Results: Of the 332 patients included, the majority were female (56%) and 76% were under 5 years of age. The most common presenting complaints were cough (40%) fever (34%), and nausea/vomiting (19%). The most common PEU diagnoses were upper respiratory tract infections (27%), gastroenteritis (11%), and pneumonia (8%). The majority of patients (77%) were discharged from the PEU, while 22% were admitted. Regarding injury prevention practices, the majority (68%) of guardians reported their child never used seatbelts or car seats. Of 68 patients that rode bicycles/motorbikes, one reported helmet use. More than half of caregivers cook at potentially dangerous heights; 59% use ground/low level stoves.Conclusions: Chief complaints and diagnoses in the PEU population were congruent with communicable disease burdens seen globally. Measures for primary injury prevention were reported as rarely used in the sample studied. The epidemiology described by this study provides a framework for improving public health education and provider training in resourcelimited settings.

What are the effects of parenting styles on academic performance and how unequal are these effects on secondary school students from different gender and socioeconomic status families constitute the theme of this paper. A cross-sectional and purposive sampling technique was adopted to gather information from a sample of 448 students on a Likert scale. Chi-square, Kendall’s Tau-c tests and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to determine the extent of the relationship among the variables. Chi-square and Kendall’s Tau-c (Tc) test results established that the socioeconomic status of the respondent’s family explained variation in children’s academic performance due to parenting style; however, no significant difference was observed in the academic performance of students based on gender. Furthermore, hierarchal multiple regression analysis established that the family’s socioeconomic status, authoritative parenting, permissive parenting, the interaction of socioeconomic status and authoritative parenting, and the interaction of socioeconomic status and permissive parenting were significant predictors (P<0.05) of students’ academic performance. These predictor variables explained 59.3 percent variation in the academic performance of children (R2 = 0.593). Results of hierarchal multiple regression analysis in this study ranked ordered the most significant predictors of the academic performance of children in the following order. Family socioeconomic status alone was the strongest predictor (β = 18.25), interaction of socioeconomic status and authoritative parenting was the second important predictor (β = 14.18), authoritative parenting alone was third in importance (β = 13.38), the interaction of socioeconomic status and permissive parenting stood at fourth place in importance (β = 11.46), and permissive parenting was fifth (β = 9.2) in influencing academic performance of children in the study area. Children who experienced authoritative parenting and were from higher socioeconomic status families perform better as compared to children who experienced authoritarian and permissive parenting and were from low socioeconomic status families.
