Nurse Practitioner Student Perceptions of a Pilot Simulated Gerontologic Telehealth Visit

Abstract: Background: Recently published nurse practitioner (NP) education organization recommendations and telehealth equipment acquisition necessitated integration of telehealth simulation into NP curricula at a large, public university. The COVID-19 pandemic and associated rapid uptake of telehealth accelerated the need for evidence-supported research in tele-health simulation in NP education. Method: A formative gerontologic simulation scenario using teleheal… Show more

“…It also enabled them to think about situations in which telemedicine would be helpful and showed that conducting a teleconsultation took them out of their comfort zone and made them forget their usual practices. This is in line with similar results obtained in a study evaluating student nurse practitioners' perceptions of a simulated gerontological telehealth visit, as well as studies evaluating simulation for telehealth competencies of medical or nursing students [15][16][17].…”

“…5 Nurse practitioner students reported satisfaction with virtual objective structured clinical examination through videoconferencing 6 and simulated telehealth visits. 7 However, other research studies indicated nursing students were dissatisfied with remote learning experiences. Gaffney and colleagues 8 reported the transition to remote learning for nursing students was difficult for some students regardless of the nursing faculty's competence with remote learning tools.…”

“…The curriculum for NP students is guided by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), and telehealth aligns with and builds off the core competencies described by NONPF (Chike‐Harris, 2021 ; Rutledge et al, 2018 ). APRN students are in the perfect position to learn about telehealth early in their education and integrate the knowledge into their clinical experiences, which further prepares them for their future clinical practice (LaManna et al, 2021 ). Early educational intervention has the potential to provide knowledge and guide beliefs regarding telehealth thus affording APRN students time in their education to further practice and develop skills in telehealth, which they can use as future APRNs.…”
