Paediatric headaches are usually easily managed. However, one in ten children may experience headaches that undermine their quality of life more than other serious conditions. When assessing a child with headache, the following features are key: location, quality, severity, chronology, setting, other symptoms, and factors that aggravate or alleviate pain. Staff can look for potential triggers at school, especially as absenteeism due to headaches could lower educational attainment and compromise psychosocial adjustment. School nurses can help ensure that staff are aware of the school's policy on troublesome headaches, help develop health-care plans for individual children, discuss concerns with parents and carers, offer advice on medical management and, if appropriate, communicate with the child's GP. Most people with headaches—even those with severe symptoms—have not sought medical help.
