Nurse-led clinic for patients with liver cirrhosis—effects on health-related quality of life: study protocol of a pragmatic multicentre randomised controlled trial

Abstract: IntroductionLiver cirrhosis affects health-related quality of life (HRQoL) even in its early stages. Morbidity is especially high when the disease decompensates and self-care actions become essential. “…When implementing the results of this study into health care, registered nurses are encouraged to actively explore the individual's suffering process associated with liver cirrhosis. Only when the unique situation of each person is understood, patient‐centred approach may commence (Fridlund et al, 2014) in order to retain personal dignity by taking advantage of functionality (Hjorth et al., 2018; Orem, 1980). Also, registered nurses may offer support to relieve stigmatisation and psychological impact to achieve positive living despite a fatal disease (Hjorth et al., 2018).…”

For example, to facilitate encounters with patients, Orem's self‐care deficit nursing theory (Orem, 1980) and motivational interviewing techniques (Miller & Rollnick, 2013) may be valuable in nurse‐led clinics in liver cirrhosis.…”
