Numerical study on wet compression in a supercritical air centrifugal compressor

Abstract: Wet compression is widely used to reduce compression work and improve efficiency in gas turbines. However, wet compression has not been industrially applied in the compressed air energy storage system (only few studies on isothermal compressed air energy storage system exist), which has an urgent demand to reduce the compression work. The high-pressure section of the compressed air energy storage system usually contains supercritical air, and the influence of supercritical wet compression is not yet clear. Thu… Show more

“…15 The tendency for air intercooling is quite justified. This can be done in at least two ways: external cooling (through the heat exchange surface) 16,17 or mixing of cyclic air with dispersed water (water injection at the compressor inlet or along its path between the stages) 8,[18][19][20][21] In this case, water droplets during evaporation remove heat from the air flow, cooling it. 8,22,23 Late 2000s General Electric put into commercial operation the first modern gas turbine LMS100 with a nominal capacity of 100 MW using air intercooling technology in the gas turbine compressor.…”

“…Hence, without loss of the gas turbine performance, the gas temperature at the turbine inlet decreases. It favorably affects the gas turbine resource [14][15][16].…”

“…Special high-pressure nozzles are most commonly used for water injection, but many problems exist, in particular the drops' separation of injected water on the blades and the compressor housing [30]. Therefore, modern injection methods and preparation of the dispersed flow should provide an average droplet diameter of less than 20 to 25 µm [31].…”
