Numerical Study on Thermal and Fluid Dynamic Behavior of a Compact Heat Exchanger Partially Filled with Metal Foam

Abstract: Designers of heat exchangers are regularly searching for new methods that enhance the heat transfer efficiency. A possible substitute of the conventional fins is the use of open-cell metal foams. Low density, good rigidity, high thermal conductivity and huge value of surface/volume ratio represent the best characteristics of porous media. For these features, metal foams are used in several applications such as heat exchangers, fuel cells, heat sinks and solar thermal plants. The need to create new systems in r… Show more

“…Apart from the stated advantages, coiled tube heat exchangers may also suffer from the touching of tube walls with shell wall which leads to flow mal distribution on the shell side of the heat exchanger, which in turn reduces the performance of the heat exchanger [1]. Heat Exchanger designers always search for new methods to improve the life time of heat exchanger and heat transfer efficiency [21]. One way to overcome the above problem is to use a wire over the inner tube which separates the tubes from other tubes as well as shell wall.…”

“…In addition, many instruments employ this concept in measurement of quantities in viscometers, chromatographs etc. Therefore, one can understand that there are plenty of applications of flow of fluids over immersed objects [1]. The successful handling of design and operation of such systems depends on thorough understanding of the underlying transport phenomena.…”
