This study investigated the effect of corrosion pits on the mechanical degradation of steel Q345 under strong acid corrosion. The experiment on a total of 27 steel Q345 specimens corroded by 36% industrial hydrochloric acid for 0 h, 1 h, 2 h, 4 h, 8 h, 12 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h, respectively, is conducted to study failure mode and stress-strain curves. After that, a noncontact topography scanner (DSX500) scanned geometric parameters of corrosion pits in steel Q345 to establish its mechanical degradation. The surface morphology and the corresponding degradation law of corroded steel are also revealed. In addition, the steel plastic fracture criterion taking into account equivalent plastic fracture strain and average stress triaxiality T is adopted to propose the uniform pit model. The analysis results show that the failure mode gradually changes from ductile to brittle. It is noted that the depth and relative size of the corrosion pit are the main factors affecting the increase of the maximum pit coefficient. Further, FEM based on uniform corrosion pits is found by the flexible damage evolution criterion. Its calculation results are entirely consistent with experimental results, indicating that this model can mirror the surface morphology of steel suffering strong corrosion, and simulated accurately stress flow law and necking failure of strong corrosion steel. The proposed criterion is validated with verification results and can provide good references for the design of steel bridges under strong corrosion.

New materials and manufacturing technologies require applicable non-destructive techniques for quality assurance so as to achieve better performance. This study comprehensively investigated the effect of influencing factors including excitation frequency, lift-off distance, defect depth and size, residual heat, and surface roughness on the defect EC signals of an Inconel 738LC alloy produced by selective laser melting (SLM). The experimental investigations recorded the impedance amplitude and phase angle of EC signals for each defect to explore the feasibility of detecting subsurface defects by merely analyzing these two key indicators. Overall, this study revealed preliminary qualitative and roughly quantitative relationships between influencing factors and corresponding EC signals, which provided a practical reference on how to quantitively inspect subsurface defects using eddy current testing (ECT) on SLMed parts, and also made solid progress toward on-line ECT in additive/subtractive hybrid manufacturing (ASHM) for fabricating SLMed parts with enhanced quality and better performance.

Eddy current (EC) testing has become one of the most common techniques for measuring metallic planar structures in various industrial scenarios such as infrastructures, automotive, manufacturing, and chemical engineering. There has been significant progress in measuring the geometry, electromagnetic properties, and defects of metallic planar structures based on electromagnetic principles. In this review, we summarize recent developments in EC computational models, systems, algorithms, and measurement approaches for planar structures. First, the computational models including analytical models, numerical methods, and plate property estimation algorithms are introduced. Subsequently, the impedance measurement system and probes are presented. In plate measurements, sensor signals are sensitive to probe lift-off, and various algorithms for reducing the lift-off effect are reviewed. These approaches can be used for measureing thickness and electromagnetic properties. Furthermore, defect detection for metallic plates is also discussed.
