Numerical studies on the influence of selected construction features and road conditions on the performance of road cable barriers

Abstract: Cable barriers are commonly used on Polish roads, including motorways and local roads. Their main elements are pre-stressed wire ropes, which are usually anchored at two ends in concrete blocks buried in the soil. In this work numerical studies concerning the influence of selected construction features and parameters of the vehicle motion on the performance of cable barriers were performed. Numerical simulations are a useful tool to conduct such analyses that is now being used more and more. The calculations w… Show more

“…In the study conducted by Yilmaz et al [11], the motorcyclist protection barrier system was optimized, as a result safer and more economical sections were obtained. Moreover, such as, improving crash cushion systems that provide road safety [12], ASI value of cable barrier for different speeds [13], determining the danger levels of obstacles such as traffic lights, trees, lighting poles, rocks, ditches, etc. that threaten roadside safety [14], and comparing the ASI-THIV values and AIS-HIC values [15][16] [17], these studies were carried out with the help of real crash tests and FE analyses.…”

“…Other than steel guardrails and concrete barriers mentioned above, there are studies related to roadside safety. Such as, improving crash cushion systems that provide road safety, 11 ASI value of cable barrier for different speeds, 12 determining the danger levels of obstacles such as traffic lights, trees, lighting poles, rocks, ditches, etc. that threaten roadside safety, 13 and comparing the ASI-THIV values and AIS-HIC values, [14][15][16] these studies were carried out with the help of real crash tests and FE analyzes.…”

“…Knowledge about this wire rope and its properties is crucial, helping to better understand and analyze vehicular impacts on cable barriers. So far, research has mainly focused on evaluations of the performance of the whole safety system [ 33 , 34 ]. To the best of the author’s knowledge, the only studies on the properties of the 3 × 7 19-mm wire rope have been published by the team led by Reid [ 20 , 35 , 36 ].…”
