Currently, spraying is a main means for dust prevention and control in underground coal mines. The dust-suppression efficiency via spraying is highly correlated with the wettability of coal dusts. There are many factors affecting the wettability of coal dust, among which coal’s metamorphic degree has great influence. In order to gain in-depth knowledge of the effects of coal metamorphic degree on coal dust wettability and the dust-suppression efficiency via spraying, 6 coal dust samples with different metamorphic degrees were collected and used in the study. In the experiments, the microproperties, wetting performance, and dust-suppression efficiency via spraying were measured. According to the experimental results of coal’s microproperties, with the improvement of metamorphic degree, the content of hydrophilic oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface, the surface roughness, the specific surface area, and the interpore diameter all decreased. In addition, as coal’s metamorphic degree was enhanced from lignite to meager-lean coal, the wettability of the coal dust dropped. On the other hand, as the metamorphic degree of coal quality continued to be improved to anthracite, the wettability of the coal dust increased instead. The measured results revealed that the dust-suppression efficiency via spraying was highly correlated with the wettability of coal dust. The coal dust with better wettability exhibited higher dust-suppression efficiency via spraying. With the increase of water-supply pressure, the effect of coal dust wettability on the dust-suppression efficiency via spraying was weakened, and the difference of dust-suppression efficiency among different coal dust samples was narrowed.

One of the main problems related to the excavation of dog headings in coal beds is the emission of methane during this process. To prevent the occurrence of dangerous concentration levels of this gas, it is necessary to use an appropriate ventilation system. The operation effectiveness of such a system depends on a number of mining, geological, technical and organizational factors. One of them includes the size and permeability of the fractures zone formed around the excavated dog heading. The primary objective of the paper is to determine the influence of this zone on the ventilation parameters, including the concentration and distribution of methane in the excavated dog heading. In order to achieve the assumed objective, multivariate model-based tests were carried out, which reproduce a real-world dog heading. Literature data and test results in actual conditions were used to determine the size and permeability of the fractures zone around the excavated heading. These data served as the basis to develop a model of the region under analysis and adopt boundary conditions. The analyses were carried out for four permeability values of the fractures zone and for two volumetric flow rates of the air stream supplied to the heading. The results were used to determine the influence of the fractures zone on the distribution and concentration of methane in the heading under analysis. The model-based tests were performed using ANSYS Fluent software. The idea to take into account the fractures zone around the heading represents a new approach to the analysis of ventilation parameters in underground mine headings. The results clearly indicate that this zone affects the ventilation parameters in the heading, including the distribution and concentration of methane. The knowledge obtained from the tests should be used to optimize the ventilation process of dog headings. Development and Performance Characterization of a Hybrid Dust Suppressant Based on Sodium Ligninsulfonate Modification

A naturally occurring macromolecular material (sodium ligninsulfonate) is mixed with acrylic acid to perform grafting copolymerization and generate a sodium ligninsulfonate–acrylic acid graft copolymer. The chemical structure of the product is characterized based on infrared spectroscopy. Using viscosity and surface tension as indicators, the optimal ratio of wetting agents and coagulants is selected for auxiliary materials to prepare a novel hybrid dust suppressant customized for coal mines. The results indicate that, compared with spraying with water alone, this dust suppressant enhances the average anti‐weathering performance of coal samples by 28.34%, 30.13%, and 43.40% at wind speeds of 5–10, 11–15, and 16–20 m s−1, respectively. The hybrid dust suppressant can keep the weathering rate of dust to less than 40% at a wind speed of 19.3 m s−1 (i.e., Beaufort scale 8). High‐resolution scanning electron microscopy shows the dust suppressant has a good curing effect. Finally, coal quality analysis experiments show the dust suppressant does not reduce coal quality.
