Numerical Simulation on Correcting Camber and Wedge of Steel Slabs in Hot Rolling Mill

Abstract: In the hot rolling process, the steel slab may experience a temperature gradient along its transverse direction which may cause camber and wedge after rolling. Camber and wedge phenomenon will affect the quality of the steel plate. To eliminate camber and wedge phenomenon, a pair of side guides is placed before and behind the hot rolling mill. The position mode and the force mode are the control modes for side guides to correct the slab shape and to guide the slab to follow rolling direction. Finite element an… Show more

“…The intermediate side guide prolongs the contact period of the slab end even if the slab end is disengaged from the vertical rolls VR3, therefore, allows a correcting moment exerted on the slab end region. Increasing the engaging period also can be achieved by force-mode side guides [17]. While the slab enters the force-mode side guide, the contact between the side guide and the slab is controlled by maintaining a constant reaction exerted on the slab so that more stable and continuous contact and consequently a more stable force history during the engaging period can be achieved.…”

“…In industrial production, there is a reciprocal causation relationship between deviation of rolled piece and its asymmetric profile. Domestic and foreign scholars investigated the relationship at different angles, including the transforming relationship from the wedge of rolled piece to its deviation via different models [2,3], the factors causing deviation [4,5], the deviation controlling strategy [6] and the influence on flatness of deviation [7]. However, the present research results are not enough to give a definite priority relationship between wedge and deviation to be applied in industry.…”
