Numerical Simulation of the Head/Disk Interface for Bit Patterned Media

Abstract: This investigation presents a numerical model and air bearing simulations of a femto-type slider flying over bit patterned media. It analyzes the characteristics of the air bearing pressure profile and the air bearing pressure gradient over the bit patterned area. The effect of the dimensions of the bit pattern on the flying characteristics of a typical femto-type slider is studied.Index Terms-Bit patterned media (BPM), flying height, head disk interface.

“…Residual topography left behind by the BPM manufacturing process challenges air bearing designers to design a slider that can better follow residual topography [34,64,65] as well as media manufacturers to have a uniform overcoat and lubricant coverage of the media surface. Moreover, the residual media topography could lead to excessive induced lubricant roughness on the microscale (lubricant moguls and ripples) unless a new lubricant can be designed.…”

“…To numerically simulate this situation, the mesh size generated on the air bearing surface of a magnetic recording slider should be around 2 nm or less to accurately capture the geometry of the bit pattern on the disk surface (10)(11)(12) . Due to the numerical limitations of present day air bearing simulation codes, great difficulties are encountered in the simulation bit patterned media.…”
