Numerical simulation of oil spills based on the GNOME and ADIOS

Abstract: The Exxon Valdez oil spill emergency has shown that simulation of oil spills trajectory is the main action in planning response measures. Modeling the trajectory of the oil slick allows predicting in advance the direction of the motion of the stain, the time it will take to reach the shore and assess the possible environmental consequences for the contaminated coastal zone. In this paper, the Exxon Valdez oil spill trajectory was analyzed using two different models, the GNOME model and the HAZAT trajectory mod… Show more

“…Aside GNOME, there are other modelling tools (Elizaryev et al 2018), however, GNOME is widely used because it is freely available, user friendly, simple and provides accurate and detailed analysis of oil spills in the marine environment (Ibarra -Mojica et al 2018;Marta-Almeida et al 2013). It also has the capacity to model different types of oil and provides the minimum regret (worst case scenario) of spilled oil (Korsah and Anifowose 2014).…”

“…POSEIDON-OSM simulates evaporation, emulsification and sedimentation processes. It is used for the Greek Sea [40] , the Baltic Sea [41], and the Aegean Sea [42,43]. ADIOS (Automated Data Inquiry for Oil Spills) is NOAA's oil weathering model.…”

“…They are the release of a vapor-air mixture into the environment. The release leads to a permanent deterioration of the environmental condition of the territory of oil product storage facilities and to the occurrence of explosive and fire-hazardous situations when the ignition source appears [1]. The main losses of oil products fall on storage in tanks (about 70% of the total amount).…”

“…Big breathing account for the main share of losses (more than 50%). There are many studies devoted to the problem of big breaths [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Bahadori in his work [2] suggests using two methods for predicting the number of losses when filling reservoirs.…”
