To improve the surface compatibility between hydrophobic poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and hydrophilic bamboo cellulose nanowhiskers (BCNWs), four commercial available silane coupling agents were employed to modify their interfaces with different concentrations (0, 1, 8, and 16 wt%). PLA/BCNW biocomposite films were fabricated by solution casting. The effects of silylated BCNW on the thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of PLA biocomposites were investigated. The coupled reaction between coupling agents and cellulose via Si‐O‐C bonding and hydrogen bonding was confirmed. Both, tensile strength and tensile modulus, decreased with the four silane treatments. The maximum elongation at break values increased to 213.8, 111.3, 255.3, and 209.8% after 16 wt% A‐151, 8 wt% A‐1100, 8 wt% A‐174, and 8 wt% A‐189 silane treatments, respectively, with respect to 12.4% of the untreated composite. A wire‐drawing phenomenon was observed on the tensile fractural surface. Glass transition temperature and crystallinity decreased after the surface modifications. POLYM. Unsaturated fatty acid (FA)–modified nanocellulose (m‐NC) shows potential application in improving mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester/m‐NC nanocomposites (UPe/m‐NC). A polyester matrix is obtained by polycondensation of maleic anhydride and products of poly(ethylene terephthalate) depolymerization with propylene glycol. Two methods of NC modification are performed: direct esterification with oleic acid, linseed, or sunflower oil FAs, and esterification/amidation with maleic acid/ethylene diamine (MA/EDA) bridging group followed by amidation with methyl ester of FAs. Increases of stress at break in the ranges from 148.8% to 181.4% and from 155.8% to193.0% for UPe/m‐NC composites loaded with 1 wt% of NC modified directly or via MA/EDA cross‐linker, respectively, are obtained. Results of the modeling of tensile modulus, by using the Cox–Krenchel model, show good agreement with experimentally obtained data. The effect of FAs' cross‐linking capabilities on the dynamic‐mechanical and thermal properties of the UPe/m‐NC is studied. Cross‐linking density, modulus, and Tg of the nanocomposite show appropriate relation with the unsaturation extent/structure of NC modification.

The compatibility of polymer blends is pivotal for their performance enhancement due to the large surface tension and weak interaction among individual components. In this work, epoxide hyperbranched polyurethanes (EHPU) was used to realize the compatibility between silica (SiO2), generated in situ from tetraethoxysilane, and benzoxazine (BZ). The compatibilization effect and mechanism of EHPU on SiO2/BZ were investigated via the differences of cure characteristics and kinetics between BZ, SiO2/BZ, and EHPU‐SiO2/BZ blend. EHPU‐SiO2/BZ blend exhibited lower initial curing temperature and wider curing window than those of SiO2/BZ and neat BZ. In addition, the co‐curing reaction was existed between EHPU and BZ, which contributed to the reactive compatibilization. More importantly, the growth of SiO2 particles was hindered by the nonreactive compatibilization due to the hydrogen interaction between EHPU and the silanols. Thus, the compatibilization of EHPU on SiO2/BZ blend is a result of the synergetic effect of the hydrogen interaction and the co‐curing. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym.
