The capability of accurate numerical simulation and optimization is needed as the technology of geological carbon sequestration (GCS) advances. It can provide quick information for preliminary design of a GCS project. The simulation and optimization results can provide better understanding of the nature of GCS and the uncertainties associated with it and therefore can provide guidelines and the development of best practices for its deployment. In this paper, first the satisfactory history-matching of the Sleipner GCS project is achieved by using the TOUGH2 simulation package. Next, the reservoir engineering technique known as water-alternating-gas (WAG) is applied to the model of the Utsira formation and optimization studies are conducted to determine the optimal WAG operation using the recently developed genetic algorithm based simulation/optimization code GA-TOUGH2. Results of WAG optimization suggest that in situ CO 2 footprint reduction and CO 2 dissolution acceleration can be achieved while minimizing the water usage.

Injection or withdrawal of fluid at depth may trigger felt seismicity. Such human‐induced seismicity is a key environmental concern related to the exploitation of natural underground resources. Thus, understanding how to avoid triggering felt earthquakes plays a crucial role in the success of underground anthropogenic activities, such as CO2 geological storage. In this work, we conduct 3D simulations of injection‐triggered fault reactivation, in order to investigate the effects of well geometry on seismic rupture and CO2 leakage. We analyze two different cases of injection, through (1) a vertical and (2) a horizontal well. Simulation results for the vertical well show the fault pressurizing faster and more locally than for the horizontal well, resulting in a smaller seismic event. For the horizontal well, the pressure is distributed over a wider area along the fault, which requires a longer time to reactivate, but results in a larger event. Fault reactivation also produces changes in damage‐zone and fault‐core permeability, allowing the CO2 to leak from the injection zone through overlying caprock, toward shallower depths. Although the calculated fault permeability enhancement is similar for the two cases, results show a slightly higher leakage rate for the vertical well in the region close to the well itself, while the leakage resulting from injection through the horizontal well is more widely distributed.Published 2015. The problem of carbon dioxide utilization is of increasing concern to the public, since measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are no longer sufficient to prevent a global increase in temperature on the planet. Most modeling scenarios show that a significant deployment of negative emission technologies is required. Carbon dioxide is often used as an agent for enhancing hydrocarbon production in the development of oil and gas fields, which is technologically consistent with projects for its utilization and underground storage in depleted reservoirs, saline aquifers, and shale rocks. For the successful implementation of such sequestration projects, it is necessary to conduct a complex of experimental, modeling, and field studies. It is necessary to understand the characteristic physical and chemical changes that occur in a subterranean formation during sequestration processes, such as dissolution, chemical reactions, convective mixing, advective processes, and dispersion. Computer modeling of ongoing processes is seen as a very important task for the correct functioning of such projects. The article deals with topical problems of computer modeling of processes associated with underground injection and storage of carbon dioxide, and also presents the results of laboratory studies on the utilization of carbon dioxide through its catalytic conversion into useful energy resources—hydrogen and hydrocarbons. The findings of this study can help to better understand physicochemical mechanisms that can occur in subterranean formations when carbon dioxide is injected. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
