Numerical modelling of fragmentation by blasting and gravity flow in sublevel caving mines

Abstract: The sublevel caving (SLC) mining method is based on the utilisation of gravity flow of blasted ore and caved waste rock. Blasting is the initial and the major impact upon primary fragmentation and later material flow characteristics. A coupled numerical model was employed to investigate the fragmentation due to blasting and the gravity flow using the LS-DYNA code. In the coupled model, a loose discrete element model (DEM) was used to represent caved waste rock and a bonded DEM model was used to represent the o… Show more

“…A high explosive burn (HEB) material card was used to simulate the detonation of the explosives. The input values for JWL EOS and HEB for an emulsion material are provided in Table 2 [35]. Stemming is a material used to prevent the release of detonation gases by filling the remaining areas in the blast hole, and it helps the pressure generated by the explosives to crush the rock efficiently.…”

“…Blasting and HE interactions with rock or other brittle materials are challenging but important topics of research. Numerous experimental and numerical studies of varying scales have been conducted to understand these complicated phenomena including blasting and material [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. However, large-scale and field tests are relatively costly and difficult to conduct.…”
