Numerical modelling approach for the management of seasonal influenced river channel entrance

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe dynamic nature of a river channel entrance is commonly seasonal dependant. This is evidenced in the topography of river channel entrances in East Coast of Borneo which is influenced by both North East (NE) and South West (SW) monsoons on top of surrounding parameters such as waves and tides, sedimentation as well as climate change. Advanced numerical modelling technique is frequently used as a leading approach to investigate the complicated nature of river channel entrance to well represent … Show more

“…The FM module comprises different models, but in this research the hydrodynamic model (HD) was selected, which calculates the water surface changes and flows in response to a variety of forcing functions, comprising wind shear stress, bed shear stress and wave radiation stress from the SW module. The SW module calculates the growth, decay and transformation of waves caused by the wind offshore and onshore, combined with current and water level changes at the same time from the HD module, and the BW module is a numerical model for calculation and analysis of short-and long-period waves in ports, harbours and coastal areas [21][22][23][24][25][26].…”

“…A depth-adaptive mesh was adopted to describe the shallow water environment at the study area. This software has been used to simulate nearshore waves in Malaysia [21], [22] and other parts of the world [23], [24]. MIKE 21 SW simulates growth, decay and transformation of wind-generated waves as well as swells in offshore and coastal areas.…”

“…Analyzing flow in natural streams and complex channel systems by numerical models has become very popular in the last three decades (Vreugdenhil and "in press") [13][14][15]. Computational grid used in such conditions should be generated with non-rectangular mesh to be able to conform to irregular boundaries such as the non- [5,7,[16][17][18][19][20].…”
