Numerical modeling of groundwater flow close to drinking water resources during flood events

Abstract: When a flood wave passes along the River Danube, the groundwater level rises, hence property is directly threatened and, in particular, the groundwater resources for the water supply located near the affected rivers increase. As the water is polluted during the flood, a solution to this problem is more than necessary. The specific area for this problem-Sihoť Island, was chosen as one of the most significant areas for groundwater supply in Bratislava. This island is flooded repeatedly every year with several fl… Show more

“…The Triwaco program [8] was used for numerical simulation of the groundwater flow. This simulation package for groundwater is a program system for a quasi-threedimensional simulation of groundwater flow, based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) [9], [10]. The differential equations of filtration plane groundwater flow follow from Darcy's Law and from the continuity equation [11], [12].…”

“…This method is used in practice [27]. The importance of evaluating dewatering data is clear: a better knowledge helps to find a safe method for the water supply [28], it can contribute to the numerical modeling, [29] which is also an effective tool to investigate aquifers, and last but not least, it helps to preserve our underground water resource.…”

“…The stream intersecting the central part of the modeled area has these parameters ( Table II). In case of the RIV module simulation it is needed to perform a surface water level simulation in an external application [14] Suitable applications include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) model and Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI) Mike 11 model. Mike 11 is a 1-dimensional unsteady flow hydraulic model used for the simulation of flow in rivers [15].…”
