Numerical Methods for the Design of Meso-Structures: A Comparative Review

Abstract: Over the past decade, there has been an increase in the intentional design of meso-structured materials that are optimized to target desired material properties. This paper reviews and critically compares common numerical methodologies and optimization techniques used to design these meso-structures by analyzing the methods themselves and published applications and results. Most of the reviewed research targets mechanical material properties, including effective stiffness and crushing energy absorption. The nu… Show more

“…Effatparvar et al (2007) presented new distributed method to reducing the energy for the communication between nods and coordinator. Also Yoder et al (2015), Fazelpour et al (2016) and Shankar et al (2015) used the optimization methods in Meso-Scaled material. Saffar Ardabili et al (2007) evaluated efficiency score of Decision Making Units (DMUs) by the undesirable outputs.…”

“…They demonstrated with an example that requirement based engineering approach does not result in the best possible design solution. The limitations of requirement-based engineering design are also addressed by ( Collopy, 2007;Lee, 2014;Shankar, Fazelpour and Summers, 2015;Yoder et al, 2015;Fazelpour, Shankar and Summers, 2016;Sridhar et al, 2016). Much of this research, however, used either case studies or qualitative research methods to point out the challenges of requirement-based engineering design.…”

“…There are many papers have been proposed based on optimization in them [10]- [19] and [24]- [26]. These papers tried to optimize their problems by presented some formal methods and fitness functions in them.…”
