Numerical Investigation on the Effects of Flame Propagation in Rotary Engine Performance With Leakage and Different Recess Shapes Using Three-Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics

Abstract: This study was carried out with an objective to develop a 3D simulation methodology for rotary engine combustion study and to investigate the effect of recess shapes on flame travel within the rotating combustion chamber and its effects on engine performance. The relative location of spark plugs with respect to the combustion chamber has significant effect on flame travel, affecting the overall engine performance. The computations were carried out with three different recess shapes using iso-octane (C8H18) fue… Show more

“…The results showed that increasing apex seal clearances could cause the rotary engine performance to deteriorate continuously. Harikrishnan et al 31 used a 3D numerical model on STAR‐CD software to investigate the influence of apex seal leakage on the flame propagation in a rotary engine. The investigation showed that at the compression stage, apex seal leakage could lead to a better mixing of the mixture in the CC.…”

“…The investigation showed that at the compression stage, apex seal leakage could lead to a better mixing of the mixture in the CC. More importantly, the above successful works of Jeng et al 30 and Harikrishnan et al 31 showed that numerical simulation can be used for in‐depth study of the effect of apex seal leakage on the flow field of rotary engines.…”

“…However, due to the inherent structure of the rotary engine, the problem of ASL is difficult to avoid completely. Meanwhile, the studies of Jeng et al and Harikrishnan et al , indicated that ASL has a significant influence on the mixture motion and combustion process in the rotary engine. From the above analysis, it can be seen that the stratified combustion technology is expected to solve the problem where the mixture at the back of the cylinder cannot burn in time.…”
