Numerical Investigation of Multistaged Tesla Valves

Abstract: The Tesla valve is a passive-type check valve used for flow control in micro- or minichannel systems for a variety of applications. Although the design and effectiveness of a singular Tesla valve is somewhat well understood, the effects of using multiple, identically shaped Tesla valves in series—forming a multistaged Tesla valve (MSTV)—have not been well documented in the open literature. Therefore, using high-performance computing (HPC) and three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the effec… Show more

“…These results confirm the high-Re irreversibility reported in previous studies, which have emphasized the circuitous route taken by reverse flows 21,22,25 . Our visualizations reveal the nature of the reverse flow instability and also the extent of mixing, which we associate with increased dissipation and resistance.…”

“…This work presents systematic experimental characterizations of Nikola Tesla's fluidic valve or diode across a wide range of both steady and unsteady flow conditions. The case of steady pressure/ flow-rate considered in previous studies on Tesla-like channels provides a point of comparison to our results 13,[16][17][18][21][22][23][24]31,34,35,13 . No earlier work reports on the abrupt rise in diodicity, which likely reflects the singular values or narrow ranges in Re explored.…”

“…The aim was to find the appropriate turbulent model which agrees the best with experimental data and to optimize the valve using the right model so as to increase the diodicity. Further, Thompson et al [25] have done numerical analysis of multi-staged TV and found that the diodicity can increase up to 2 on having a series of TVs. This effect is prominent at higher Reynolds number.…”

“…Mohammadzadeh et al (2013) showed that the best number of valve stages is two stages and explained the defect of Tesla-type valves in low-Reynolds regimes. Thompson and Paudel (2014) investigated numerically a multistage Tesla valve.…”
