Numerical investigation of dynamic melting process in a thermal energy storage system using U-tube heat exchanger

Abstract: A thermal energy storage system using U-tube heat exchanger is proposed and compared with the system using singletube heat exchanger. Based on the enthalpy-porosity method, three-dimensional numerical models using computational fluid dynamics approach are developed to simulate the dynamic melting of phase change material in the two systems. Variable specific heat technique and combined conduction-convection heat transfer models are applied to achieve precise simulation. The model is first validated using publi… Show more

“…The computational fluid dynamics model was validated against the available experimental data obtained from published literature. A thermal energy storage system using U-tube heat exchanger is proposed in the paper of ''Numerical investigation of dynamic melting process in a thermal energy storage system using U-tube heat exchanger'' 9 and compared with the system using single-tube heat exchanger. Based on the enthalpy-porosity method, three-dimensional (3D) numerical models using computational fluid dynamics approach are developed to simulate the dynamic melting of PCM in the two systems.…”

“…Commonly used energy storage devices include coil type energy storage tanks. According to the coil-type structure characteristics, there exists the shell-tube [7], U-tube [8], fin tube [9,10], and spiral tube [11], among others. Heat transfer fluid (HTF) circulates in the coil, while PCM stores or releases energy outside the coil.…”
