Numerical Evaluation of Prequalified End-Plate Connections Used in a Framed Steel Industrial Structure

Abstract: The design of end-plate connections for steel structures is more loosely specified in Chilean regulations than in American regulations. Nevertheless, eight-bolt extended stiffened (8ES) end-plate connections have not derived benefit from extensive past research, and therefore, their normative recommendations are quite constraining. In this study, both the prequalification and qualification limits are evaluated, and the linear and nonlinear analyses of a connection from a case study focused on a typical industr… Show more

“…Eleven years after the 2010 event, research on its effects on built civil infrastructure is still of great relevance, with studies being continuously performed to improve current structural design codes and thus ensure satisfactory structural performance [2,3]. In particular, Chile is seen as a natural laboratory that provides the national and international earthquake engineering communities with the opportunity to calibrate structural design standards and serves as a reference in the earthquake-resistant construction industry.…”

“…However, these types of structures have received little attention, with only a few studies clarifying their performance against the action of earthquakes [ 4 , 11 , 12 ]. Although recent works have addressed the seismic response of this type of structure, even proposing procedures to optimize the design of prequalified connections or to specifically study the nonlinear response of such connections, determination of their seismic response still needs to be completed [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 ].…”
