For the research and development (R&D) of wave energy converters (WECs), numerical wave tanks (NWTs) provide an excellent numerical tool, enabling a cost-effective testbed for WEC experimentation, analysis and optimisation. Different methods for simulating the fluid dynamics and fluid structure interaction (FSI) within the NWT have been developed over the years, with increasing levels of fidelity, and associated computational expense. In the past, the high computational requirements largely precluded Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) from being applied to WEC analysis. However, the continual improvement and availability of high performance computing has led to the steady increase of CFD-based NWTs (CNWT) for WEC experiments. No attempt has yet been undertaken to comprehensively review CNWT approaches for WECs. This paper fills this gap and presents a thorough review of high-fidelity numerical modelling of WECs using CNWTs. In addition to collating the published literature, this review tries to make a step towards a best practice guideline for the applications of CFD in the field of wave energy.

Summary The oscillating water column (OWC) is a more common type of wave energy converter (WEC) that has been the subject of the study and development for several decades. Multi–chamber oscillating water column (MC–OWC) devices or arrays have the advantage of being more efficient in energy extraction compared to a single chamber system, particularly in more chaotic sea states. A variety of single and array OWC devices have been proposed and studied on a small–scale, whereas few large–scale devices have been tested under ocean wave conditions. This paper provides a concise review of the current state of MC–OWC device development in laboratory conditions. The review highlights explicitly the main stages of MC–OWC device development for one ongoing study as an example. This review was based on the available information in the literature from 2003 to 2012, in addition, further work is presented as part of the current study at the University of Technology Sydney. This study is from 2015 to 2018. The discussion shows the challenges that a device needs to overcome to be more competitive with other WECs in the global of wave energy converter area.

In this paper, a hybrid wave energy converter (WEC) is proposed, consisting of a fixed 3 inverted flume with long length and a bottom hole, and a long floating cube hinged with the 4 flume. The inverted flume and the long floating cube works as an oscillating water column 5(OWC) and a rotational float, respectively, to capture power from incident waves. To study the 6 performance of this hybrid WEC, analytical solution of the wave diffraction/radiation problems, 7considering the hydrodynamic interaction between the OWC and the float, is derived based on 8 linear potential flow theory and eigen-function expansion matching method in the two-9dimensional Cartesian coordinate systems. The corresponding hydrodynamic coefficients, such as 10 wave excitation forces, added mass and wave radiation damping, are also obtained, which can be 11further used in evaluation of the maximum theoretical power absorption of the hybrid WEC. 12Results are compared with a parallel study of an isolated OWC and an isolated float. 13Additionally, analytical study on power capture capability of the device for various geometrical 14parameters is then carried out. 15
