Numerical and Experimental UAV Structure Investigation by Pre-Flight Load Test

Abstract: This paper presents the preparation and execution of on-ground static and engine load tests for the composite unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The test was conducted for pre-flight structural strength verification of the remotely piloted aerial target named HORNET, after introducing some structural modifications. The ground tests were performed before the flight test campaign, to ensure the strength and operational safety of the modified structure. The panel method and Computer Aided Design (CAD) modelling were … Show more

“…The development of prestressed concrete truss bridges in China is also catching up with the world's advanced level [ 15 ]. The prestressed concrete cantilever truss bridge with the largest span is the Huanglingji Bridge (upper bearing type) in Hanyang, Hubei Province, built in 1979, with a main span of 90 m, and the cantilever truss arch bridge is the Jianhe Bridge in Guizhou Province, which was built in 1985, with a main span of 150 m. Currently, the under-supported cantilever truss girder bridge has the characteristics of rigid stay cables (the upper chord of the cantilever truss), as well as the characteristics of the truss, and the building height is small, which is more suitable for urban bridge engineering.…”

“…Furthermore, although the adoption of linear constraints for connecting the different parts of the UAV may result in a localized increase of stiffness and imprecise modeling of the interfaces' structural behavior at small loads, the structure's overall behavior is correctly captured. In particular, excellent agreement is found with operational loads impacting the structural integrity 38 …”

“…The airframe of the UAV should consist of composite materials [20], thus being lightweight and contributing to low observability with a modular frame if possible and giving the capability of conducting various missions that require low or high overall load.…”
