Numerical and Experimental Study on a Microfluidic Concentration Gradient Generator for Arbitrary Approximate Linear and Quadratic Concentration Curve Output

Abstract: This work introduces a simple and versatile method for researching the concentration gradient generator (CGG) which can present the arbitrary approximate linear and quadratic concentration gradient curves output. The concentration gradients of arbitrary approximate linear curves with two inlets and arbitrary quadratic curves in the CGG with three inlets are obtained with the corresponding flow velocities. The CGG was simulated basing on the finite element method (FEM). The fluid-dynamic and mass-transport abou… Show more

“…The distribution of concentration gradient along the z-direction was the same with or without SAM, which suggests that the weak intermolecular interactions can be altered easily when xk263 has diffusion flux in the x-direction. Our results are consistent with experiments showing the quadratic curve of concentration gradients with flow (Chen et al, 2017 ). With larger diffusion flux, a significantly smaller amount of xk263 diffused near the surface where HIVp locates, and the reduced distribution also contributed toward probability of small xk263–HIVp association, discussed later.…”

“…The method used for this simulation in the COMSOL software is the finite element method (FEM). It is prevalent for the six advantages to this technique-modeling, adaptability, accuracy, time-dependent simulation, boundaries, visualization [38]. Significant distinctive problems of concern in fields include structural analysis, heat transfer, fluid flow, mass transport and electromagnetic potential.…”

“…Several microfluidic platforms have been thus designed to establish concentration gradients in a quantifiable way. They are all based on properties of laminar flows in monophasic systems with diffusive mixing of parallel flow streams. Gradient profiles can be produced in 1D , and 2D , with gradient generators displaying typical tree-shaped structures . In this case, the number of inlets and parallel streams determines the gradient resolution, whereas the combination of structures enables the generation of complex profiles.…”
