This article describes in-flight measurements to delay laminar-turbulent transition by means of active Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) wave cancellation. The damping of unstable TS waves in the boundary layer leads to downstream shifting of the laminar-turbulent transition and therefore to the reduction of skin friction. In-flight experiments were carried out using a laminar wing glove for a sailplane. A sensor-actuator system attached to the wing glove consisted of an array of surface hot-wire reference sensors to detect oncoming TS-waves upstream of a membrane actuator and surface hot-wire error sensors downstream of the actuator. The method applied to delay laminar-turbulent transition is based on damping of naturally occurring instabilities through superimposition of the counter wave, which is calculated by a fast digital signal processor using a closed-loop feed-forward control algorithm. The experiments were carried out at flight velocities in the region of 20 m/s, which corresponds to a chord Reynolds number of about 2 million. The results show a damping of ∼50 per cent reduction of the local amplitudes of the instabilities. It is anticipated that using an actuator with a high resonance frequency and a minimal reaction time will improve damping significantly in future experiments.

Με την ολοκλήρωση της παρούσας διατριβής κλείνει μια δημιουργική περίοδος εννέα και πλέον ετών παρουσίας μου ως προπτυχιακού και μεταπτυχιακού φοιτητή στο Τμήμα Μαθηματικών του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών. Θα ήθελα λοιπόν, πριν απ' όλα, να ευχαριστήσω όλους τους Καθηγητές μου για την συμβολή τους στην πορεία μου αυτή.Από την εποχή που ήμουν τριτοετής φοιτητής, οπότε συνεργαστήκαμε για πρώτη φορά, αλλά κυρίως στα τελευταία τέσσερα χρόνια, η επιστημονική καθοδήγηση και η αμέριστη ηθική συμπαράσταση του Επιβλέποντα Καθηγητή κ. Ν. Καφούσια υπήρξε καθοριστική. Η συνεργασία μαζί του ήταν για μένα ένα συνεχές μάθημα ήθους και εργατικότητας. Στο δύσκολο αυτό δρόμο, όπου ο φοιτητής έπρεπε να μετατραπεί σε έναν αυτόνομο ερευνητή, ανεκτίμητη υπήρξε και η βοήθεια που προσέφερε με το δικό του, ξεχωριστό τρόπο, ο Καθηγητής κ. Α. Μπούντης. Η εμπειρία και οι πολύτιμες συμβουλές του κ. Γ. Καραχάλιου, Αν. Καθηγητή του Τμήματος Φυσικής του Παν/μιου Πατρών, λειτούργησαν καταλυτικά σε δύσκολες για ένα νέο ερευνητή περιστάσεις. Και στα τρία παραπάνω μέλη της Συμβουλευτικής μου Επιτροπής, που συνεχίζουν να αποτελούν παράδειγμα με το πάθος τους για την έρευνα και τη διδασκαλία, θέλω να εκφράσω από τη θέση αυτή τη βαθύτατη ευγνωμοσύνη μου για τη συνεισφορά τους στην παραγωγή της διατριβής και στην ολοκλήρωση της επιστημονικής μου κατάρτισης.Επίσης, ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ οφείλω στους δύο πολύτιμους συνεργάτες, τον Δρ. The problem of magnetohydrodynamic compressible boundary-layer flow over a flat plate, in the presence of an adverse pressure gradient, is studied numerically. The fluid is assumed to be Newtonian, electrically conducting and the magnetic field is constant and applied transversely to the direction of the flow. The fluid flow is subjected to a constant velocity of suction and (or) injection, continuous or localized, and there is no heat transfer between the plate and the fluid (adiabatic flow). The system of partial differential equations, describing the problem under consideration, is solved numerically by applying a modification of the Keller box technique. Numerical calculations are carried out for different values of the free-stream Mach number and the magnetic parameter for continuous or localized suction and (or) injection imposed at the wall. The results obtained are shown in the figures and their analysis shows that the flow field can be controlled by the application of a magnetic field as well as by continuous or localized suction and (or) injection.Résumé : On étudie numériquement le problème de la couche limite compressible magnétohydrodynamique sur une plaque plane en présence d' un gradient de pression adverse. Le fluide est supposé être Newtonien, conducteur électrique et le champ magnétique est constant et appliqué perpendiculairement à la direction de l'écoulement. L'écoulement du fluide est sujet à une vitesse constante de succion/injection qui peut être continue ou localisée et il n'existe pas de transfert de chaleur entre la plaque et le fluide (écoulement adiabatique). Le système d'équations différentielles partielles qui décrit le problème est résolu numériquement en utilisant une modification de la méthode « box » de Keller. Des calculs numériques ont été effectués pour différentes valeurs du nombre de Mach d'écoulement libre et du paramètre magnétique pour des conditions de succion/injection continues ou localisées imposées à la surface de la plaque. Les résultats obtenus sont reportés sur des figures et leur analyse a montré que le champ d'écoulement pourrait être contrôlé par l'application du champ magnétique aussi bien que par une suction/injection de fluide continue ou localisée.
